Lucic and Tkachuk are hands down the two best Flames at protecting the puck.
Johnny has to play with someone who can protect the puck because he can't.
Gaudreau's line has been terrible at possession because he's giving it up too easily. Who are the Flames who have been the best at possession the past couple weeks? Ryan and Lucic.
It makes all sorts of sense imo. This is not about adding an enforcer to make Johnny feel bigger. This is about putting Johnny with a power forward who can possess the puck, draw defenders to him and then move it. Lucic can make space for Johnny. Lucic and Ryan are excellent at maintaining possession and cycling. Johnny needs time in the zone to get open.

They fired Peters actually, dunno if you missed it.
The new coach may actually give line combinations a try for a period of time.

I like everything Ward has done so far. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Really hope that 3rd line with Gaudreau sticks.
Gaudreau has brought down the play of his line mates this year as he tries to do too much.
Put him with 2 guys who aren’t going to be impacted and can potentially benefit from Gaudreau doing everything offensively.
You can pick who they go up against and shelter them in offensive zone face offs with the top d pairing.

I like that players who are performing are getting rewarded. Mangiapane and Dubé definitely deserve a shot in the top 6 and Tkachuk and Lindholm definitely deserve to be on line 1

Yeah, Johnny starting out on the third line with Ryan and Lucic. Could be interesting. A good test of his give a crap meter. Will he battle or go through the motions?

One other angle is how the opponent responds. With those lines, Johnny likely doesn’t get the consistently hardest matchups, like he did on the undisputed first line. Both gives him a bit more space, and hopefully some confidence with it too

I am going to the game tonight. I saw 3 live Lucic goals last year.
Guaranteed Lucic goal night.
You’re welcome.

With the long break and the new lines, it almost feels like a new start, a reset. I'm excited again and I hope the boys can run with this.
I predict this is the real turning point of the season.

I'm not convinced that any line with Gaudreau on it isn't the first line.
