We'd be moving a core D. That's Winnipeg's biggest deficit right now. With Buff gone they lost arguably their top 3 defencemen.

They would be very interested in Hamonic, I would think. That is the only way the Flames could enter a Laine conversation (other than unattractive, non-starter options like Tkachuk).
Bennett is another possible starting asset.

Hamonic is probably 3rd in their list of Dmen they would want for Laine. Hanifin makes the most sense as he is 22 and signed to a great long term contract. Andersson fits their need on the right side and while less proven he is also an intriguing piece.
I could see them wanting Hanifin+Bennett+1st and likely more.
It is tough for the Jets to move him because his potential is a generational goal scorer. Based on his current play though I don’t think the Jets get that. They need him to sign a 2 year deal and see if he either fits in or tell him to play well and they will trade him.
Carolina with Svechnikov and Pesce would be an intriguing offer.

I just don't think Hamonic starts that conversation. Maybe Hanifin+

They might want Hanifin, but the Flames say no to that.
Hanifin + Bennett + 1st? No ####ing way. If Hanifin were involved, it would probably be straight up, or a small add.

I know slightly different but would you trade Tkachuk for Hanifin?

No, but I don't think Tkachuk and Laine are equivalent. There are real questions about Laine's game at this point.

Also, Hanifin would arguably be their 2nd best defenseman. And locked up for 5 years at a very good cap hit. That increases his value.

Fair, Laine would give us a potential game break on the RW as well. I would trade Hanifin for him.

Is this all assuming that Laine is returned with a contract in place? If not, I think that reduces his trade value a fair bit, since his new team will still have to negotiate a new deal for a player who has made past complaints about coaches and line assignments. I'm just not sure Winnipeg has a lot of leverage in consummating a trade.

That is why a trade will not happen for Laine. He scored 44 goals at 19 and never less than 30. The Jets will not move him for a second pairing Dman even though he is young and on a good contract.
The Jets won’t make a deal like that. Let him sit or wait for an offer sheet

Ya, if Hanifin for Laine was on the table you'd be crazy not to take it. That would solve our RW problem if the cap could work somehow. I suppose it all depends on money though, if he wants Marner money he can go find it somewhere else.

That's the thing - money matters. And Hanifin is under control for 5 more years. I wouldn't trade Hanifin for him at this point - too risky, both with respect to cost, and his head.

Yup. Laine could cost you Hanifin X 2 and play a mediocre game again. Laine from two years ago is young Brett Hull. Laine from last year is Patrick Sharp.

Laine for Draisaitl and the Oilers 2020 first round pick (unprotected) — who says no (besides Laine by immediately demanding a trade)?

I am struggling to see the incentive for the Oilers to do this deal. Or are you counting on the fact that they are dumb?

Draisaitl had as many goals as Laine had points. And doubled Laine’s point production. And Edmonton adds their first?
I’ll have one of what you are having!

If it starts with Hanifin, count me in. Underwhelming many times.

Haha, fair enough. I guess I see way bigger upside with Laine, although there is some risk as well. McDavid + Laine could be lethal IMO, considering McDavid + Draisaitl were both top-5 last year.
But who’s kidding who, they could have McDavid + McDavid and they’d still be no good.

Draisaitl is also signed for the next 7 years at $8.5 million which, while a hefty looking deal at the time is already looking like a steal for a player who was 4th in the NHL in scoring last year.
