The idea that Niskanen could help replace gostisbere is an interesting theory.
I wonder if Philly is a team that could be interested in the Short term services of TJ Brodie

Philly’s D has a bunch of nice pieces but they just haven’t fit together to form a good D core for whatever reason. Sum of parts being way more than the whole kind of thing. If they can move Ghost and bring in Trouba or someone similar it brings a lot more balance to their backend.
Moves have to be looked at from the context of the entire lineup, not just piece in for piece out. Often overlooked

I think it's already ben reported that they are trying to contend.
That's means moving out future assets for current ones Taking on a longer contract of Niskanen at a higher cap is a "contend now" move.
Not really a quantum leap. Especially considering their desire to sign another centre in Hayes.

Yeah, but they were always going to try and contend. They signed JVR to a big ticket last year, and have Giroux, Voracek, Couturier, and Gostisbehere locked up long term.
Part of contending is having good, young players on cheap ELC or bridge contracts. I can't imagine their appetite to move the second overall pick from two drafts ago is too high even if they do sign Hayes.
Also, I wouldn't consider Patrick a future asset. He is contributing now and is only going to get better.
Calgary is trying to contend now as well, but that doesn't mean Treliving is shopping Valimaki.

Love it for the Caps. Flyers must really feel Niskanen is an upgrade but I'm not so sure. Not enough to make up for that cap hit at least

Flyers are definitely throwing their cap space around.
Friedman said this morning that he thinks the Flyers are offering Hayes over $6.5 mil per year.

Nothing you've said is incorrect, but the Flyers could get more of a current asset for Patrick than his current level of contribution.

Gudas was cheaper and had better advanced stats last year, but I'm skeptical. Today's NHL puts a big emphasis on break-out Dmen. Niskanen also has some grit to his game, which is not as noticed.
There are also rumors that Comcast / ownership want big changes and at least make the playoffs. Dunno if that factors into this trade.

Caps trade Matt Niskanen to Flyers for Radko Gudas

Niskanen is a cap dump and Gudas is a 3rd pairing guy on a good team.
I’d actually like Gudas on my team on a 3rd pairing for a playoff run. Niskanen is a big heck no.

What a weird comment. The guy just won a cup a year ago, playing 20+ minutes per game.

That organization is doomed to mediocrity. Hayes is not a $6.5 million player. Why do they keep throwing around all this money to tier 2 players? Last year it was JVR and this year they are doing it again. Not going to win overpaying for supplementary players like this.
