The missed goal hurt a lot. The fact they couldn't still close out game 6 and game 7 hurt more.

How did no one on ice notice it when it happened? I recall the play going on and only the broadcasters picking up on it after much more of the game had passed. Gelinas should have started celebrating.

the obvious trip to setup the OT goal was total horse#### too. Calgary should have 2 cups.

Maybe 3 - MTL ran a pick play in O/T in 1986.

I don't like playing that game. We are closer to zero cups than we are to 3, or even 2.

You think Calgary cheated in 89? How - did Otto kick it in?

I was at that game, sitting darn close to the net when it happened. As much as it hurts, I tell ya, there was no way in hell anyone, other than Gelinas, could have seen it clearly then.
Fraser was interviewed after his retirement and you could say he was still apologetic for missing it. He said: "It was so fast, none of us saw it, Tampa got the puck and quickly went back on the attack. What was I supposed to do, stop the game and reverse the clock?" Today, the answer would have been a resounding yes. In 2004, it wasn't, unfortunately...

Who said they cheated? Just more about how close they were to losing.
If the purpose of the comment was only to identify injustices perpetrated by the officials, well then I misunderstood. The Vancouver series in 1989 was determined in OT of game 7. I'm pretty sure the Flames had an iffy call go in their favor somewhere along the way in that series. Same with Vancouver in 2004.
I guess I'm not in the camp that thinks questionable calls only ever go against my team.

At the risk of incurring said wrath of mods, after all this time, I'm still not totally convinced one way or the other myself. I mean, I want to believe, but it has always screamed "inconclusive" to me, given that the puck isn't on the ice.
So in honour of the anniversary and for the benefit of people like me and OOTC, how about we litigate this again? Convince me. I want to be convinced.

The heartbreaking part to me was actually the overtime winner. Of all the horrible things that can happen to a person I had to work that night. It was an oil and gas job and I was in and out of the truck constantly. Anyways I had really cheap hearing protection in so I could kind of hear with the volume way up when I was out of the truck. Anyways as I reached the truck I thought I heard a Flames player name(I don’t remember which) and then Maher saying he scores. For maybe 1 second ( I recall I started to raise my arms) I thought we had won the cup. It was one of the best one seconds of my life. And then bitter disappointment.

That non call bugs me more than the missed goal. That simply has to be a call, in any era, even if it’s game 6 OT.

Marcus Nilson was so close to potting the OT winner.. if only Khabibulin’s shoulder was 2” lower... the “was it in” discussion would never have started.
