When I did my gas line and had to be by hand. I was 18-20" depth and didn't come in contact at all with the line. Only place I saw the yellow tracer taping was 18" right where the line came up beside the house.

I just had a gas service put in for my shop last week. It looks like it is not more than 24" into the ground.

Seeing a trencher made utility ditch makes me want to cry that I had to do it by hand. Luckily we had a very warm December last year

I dug mine by hand, but it was only 15 feet. Still sucked.

I dug 15 feet by hand and then went and got a trencher for the next 26 feet. Wish I would have just got the trencher first, the 3" wide path it cut was much nicer than my 6" shovel width for the first trench.

I figured the time to go get one, use it and return it it would be wash. Plus I had some awkward areas that I'd have to dig by hand anyway. I was also deceived when I started becuase the clay was fairly easy to dig, but then I hit the mid section where it had been compacted by a heard of elephants, and I had to chip away at it. But ya, in general if it is farther than 10 feet, rent the beast.

Very satisfying looking at this for some reason.

Yeah, I can't wait until we actually move out there. I have to sell my house first, which is no easy task these days.

Update - I dug the previous fence post out and got down to approximately 30" before I was stymied by a watermelon sized boulder. No gas line in sight. Could have been to the left of where the hole was dug, it remains a mystery. New fence post is in and I am sunburnt after spending three days digging 7 post holes.

Figure this is the digging thread now.
Any suggestions for rentals/companies to dig about 1 foot deep for a ~120 square foot area?
Thinking about having a 'digging party' but want to price out the options for some machine help.

Is there anyone doing construction in your neighbourhood?
If you see a bobcat around go and ask them... That's how I got my pad levelled.

Something that simple I'd just get a hold of a guy on Kijiji that has a mini hoe. Probably like $70/hr ish, should only take an hour or two

Thanks for the suggestions.
The only problem is getting something like that in the backyard. We only have a 33 inch clearance between the fence and the house at the most narrow point.
I'm assuming the compact excavators are still more than that?

Hmm. Maybe. Mine was 78 inches wide but I think their are small ones at least as narrow as 35. Might be something a bit skinnier

Surferguy, Fuzz, and some shovels would fit just fine. Those guys are pro diggers.

Another question for this thread - I'm currently removing some old sod in my back yard so I can put down a ground level deck. Am I in danger of hitting any utility lined? Should I be contacting Call Before You Dig?

How deep are you going?
Either way, it's not a bad idea. Easy as hell and free for a simple one call. Keep in mind Shaw doesn't participate in the one call program because they're cheap, but 9.9/10 in residential their stuff runs in the same place as the other power and cable services.

Only going about 6 inches deep. But I suppose you're right. A call won't hurt.

Without knowing your yard and the age of the development it's hard to say. Usually, you wouldn't have to worry at that depth but not uncommon for something to be that shallow. Better safe than sorry I'd say.
