Man - Mario was a big guy and he only tops Jagr by an inch or so in that pic, which I think was taken when Jagr was 15.

I still wonder what the #### Tre was thinking waiting until the very end of camp to sign him. As if any of those expectant youngsters that preseason hoping to get that spot could even hope to hold Jaromir's jockstrap.

I'm still not sure Jagr wasn't also delaying and avoiding camp.

Prepare the Chinese national team for what?
Because best I can tell, the Chinese men's hockey team just got demoted to division 2b, and even if they win every game of every tournament from here on, there's still no possible way for them to qualify for the Olympics by 2022.
I think the women's team is about to be relegated as well, which I believe would also make it impossible to qualify for the Olympics in time for 2022.
So, I hope he's got some darn good advice...

This. Standard NFL move for star vets just about at the end too. Pretty much Brett Favre's calling card the final few seasons. If you've got the star power to skip that grind, why not?

The main reason the Chinese brought him over was to harvest his genetics, watch out for a team of half Chinese-half Jagr hybrids making noise in the wjc in about 17 years

Hm, I never knew that. Guess I never realized since the only Olympics I ever watched were in countries that had good hockey teams anyway

I still remember how bad the Italian women's team was in Turin. It was like they were killing a 5-on-3 the entire game when they played Canada.

I seem to recall the Italian team being made of of minor league Italian canadians/Americans, would think we might see something similar for the Chinese team.

Will Brandon Yip be their captain? His interview on Spittin Chiclets a few weeks ago where he talked about playing in China was awesome

This is exactly what they're planning to do. There's over a dozen full Chinese or halfie North American players that they're trying to nationalize in time for the games:
Victor Bartley
Brayden Jaw
Mikael Tam
Zach Yuen
Cory Kane
Yang Hu
Luke Lockhart
Greg Squires
Brandon Yip
Julius Zhang
Chris Seto
Josh Nicholls
Derek Dun
Jordan Liem
Paris-O'Brien
It's mostly Canadians, and mostly good ECHLers or average AHLers that play for the Kunlun Red Star or Kunlun's VHL team.
Kind of a weird strategy considering that they're not pulling from legit pro talent.
Either way, they're going to be worse than Korea at the last Olympics. Korea did it the right way, imo.

This post only shows you have abolutely no clue who JJ really is. He is an addict to hard work. Even when he is 70 his work ethic will put you and me in shame.

First of all, I never said that was the case, I said it was possible. And no, I've never met him. But I also think that lots of vets do this - look at Neidermayer late in his career, he did the same thing, except missing whole parts of the season. If he was "addicted" to hard work, why was missing training camp "because of Treliving" a big deal? And where was he working out beforehand?
It's not because he's unused to playing with a new team, and he'd already been coached by GG. What I have read about Jagr is that he always does things his own way. It's why he refused to work on backwards skating. Or crabbing at Kevin Constantine about having a number of says to "sign off" on his rules. Or what happened in Washington.
But the most important point to me is that blame is laid at the feet of Treliving for not moving quickly enough. I find that hard to believe, knowing how he likes to get signings done with new players quickly.
ETA: Jagr has sat out portions of camps with his other teams fairly often (NJ, Philly for instance). He always found he could recover and he feels like he knows his body best, so I expect he thought the last season would be similar.
