Taking a while to get to 5000

Mar. 14 Practice Notes
No Backlund or Lindholm at practice (maintenance). Smith is ill.

D Pairings (no change from last game)

Personally I wouldn't expect any forward changes either.
I am curious if Smith's illness means Rittich gets the nod tomorrow

I take it as they know the schedule and knowing that they are home for X amount of days. They can then book doctors appts, dentists, etc for them and family?
It's basically like they are regular people who ask for a vacation day to do some errands.

I’ve always been under the impression maintenance days aren’t normally planned. A way for guys who have small or nagging injuries to extend their rest. Although I could see them being planned by the coaching staff in certain situations as a way to rotate extra rest, while giving the press box guys a chance to practice on a top line.

I believe maintenance days are just hockey euphemisms for minor injuries that they don't want to risk aggravate. Scheduled maintenance days are likely a way to suggest that the injury is even more minor.
In general I'm sure coaches hate that the media is able to report who is missing from practice, so this is all made up stuff to protect players. Remember this is the league doesn't like to name it's injuries.

I don't think this is the case. Practice only takes a couple hours of their day, there is lots of free time for them to get their errands done. They also get mandated days off throughout the season.
Maintenance days as far as I know are to rest or nurse minor injuries. Bumps and bruises- that sort of thing.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but Todd Cordell's most recent article on where to play Neal when he returns is interesting. These are his suggested lines (Hathaway coming out):
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Czarnik
Mangiapane - Ryan - Neal
Basically, he says that
-you shouldn't change the first two lines, which are playing well;
-you shouldn't substitute Czarnik for Neal because Bennett - Jankowski - Czarnik has much better underlying numbers than Bennett - Jankowski - Neal; and
-that leaves you with the 4th line, the weakest of which is Hathaway.

As silly as it seems to put Neal on the 4th line, it would be a good place to introduce him back into the lineup after injury, especially with two guys with decent wheels.
Also as an aside: I imagine Monahan would be taking many more ‘maintenance days’ if he was truly injured, like what was suspected last week.

And hathaway is actually a pretty good penalty killer. I shudder at the thought of Neal on the PK.

Given the coach had no issues benching Mangiapane the other night I'd suggest he comes out, or at least would be a prime candidate to.

I personally would much rather have Hathaway come out instead of Mangiapane. I like Mangiapane a lot, but I also agree with the above poster who said that Hathaway is good on the penalty kill. Neal would indeed be a terrible replacement for Hathaway on the PK because he is so slow.
I think I like the lineup the way it is right now and don't really want to take anyone out for Neal, but I agree with Cordell that if someone has to come out, it might as well be Hathaway.

I am confident that even if Neal replaces Hathaway in the lineup there is no chance that he replaces him on the PK.

When was the last time Hathaway was scratched?
Yep. He isn't coming out.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Neal
Czarnik-Ryan-Hathaway
Gets your top guys in the line up and allows the freedom to move Czarnik up to 3L or 2L, Neal up to 2L and Frolik to 4L if need be. Also keeps PP & PK intact

That's a fair point. The article was more about who should come out, not about who will come out. Of course, you could counter that the coaches are experts and the fact they are not willing to take Hathaway out is strong evidence he should remain.

Neal isn't a good enough skater for the style Peters has our fourth line playing.
or any line

Our forward PK roster is deep enough that we may not need Neal on the PK even without Hathaway
Backlund
Lindholm
Frolik
Jankowski
Ryan

I'd suggest bumping Frolik to play with Hathaway and Ryan and put Neal with Tkachuk and Backlund to try and jump start him right away. If it doesn't work after a few games you can go back to 3M and, IMO, continue to sit Neal or put him in for Eatbread, but I don't see why. I don't see what he's earned over anyone thats been playing in his absence, they have done nothing but improve on his play.
If you give him a shot out of the gate we can a gauge if he actually feels like playing or not. Getting Neal back sounds nice on paper, but he's been pretty much a non-factor since landing here.

Czarnik will be the odd man out when Neal returns. Unless they think they can successfully swap Hathaway and Czarnik on line 4.

Why? The only reason to do that is salary and name recognition. Czarnik has been better than Neal has been at any point of the season since coming in for him.
