While I'm of the mind that you can't waste this opportunity of a year, I'm not really convinced this team needs to do anything. If there's an obvious upgrade that you can get for a decent price, go for it, but I still think our playoff rentals can be a healthy Stone and a hopefully awake James Neal. Stone is exactly the type of depth teams look for the post-season...and Neal, well, at some point he's gotta do something right? Right?
The only place that makes me nervous is in net. Even if just to give Rittich more time off, I'd prefer an upgrade behind him.

Muzzin's a really good player but that's an unnecessary add. People would end up being disappointed and it wouldn't be his fault, it'd be the fault of his role.

It's hard to argue with such a general statement, Hes, because it will be correct no matter what happens.
I would bet a beer that nothing much happens at all at the trade deadline from the Flames' side. Assets that BT would (probably) have liked to move, are not attractive to other teams. Assets that BT would have liked to have are not affordable. So, a 3rd pairing defenseman acquisition for a late round pick or pick+ minor prospect, at the most. That's it.

The only position this team needs an upgrade at is in goal. Stone fills in on the blueline. Neal getting his #### together fills in on the forward lines. We have good depth with the exception of goal. Unless Stone doesn't play hockey again, it appears we're covered outside the crease.

I meant it more in the sense that you can not really believe with Freidman etc say things like "Flames are likely only doing a small add

Yeah but 5 seasons ago... on a stacked team.
To claim we KNOW Muzzin would be great this playoffs, especially enough to warrant a 1st is insane. Especially since they don’t need top 4 D.
And I like the player.

It's just a realistic asset evaluation. Yeah, any one of the Skinner, Mark Stone or Gardiner, heck, even Simmonds acquisitions would have been great for us in the playoffs. But, Flames have nothing to offer back for those that would not hurt us in a trade.

Prior to that how much playoff experience did he have? Young unproven D, sounds like Valimaki.
All I’m saying is you can’t claim a young defenseman is for sure going to bust in the playoffs anymore than assuming someone with a decade of playoff experience is going to rise to the occasion.

Getting another goalie should be where any of the flames assets go imo. Defense has depth coming back, Muzzin will be way too expensive.

With Stone coming back, Valimaki on the horizon and Prout there as well - we already have 3 extra defencemen before really dipping into the AHL (which is pretty barren, but that's still good depth). I don't see the need for us to be spending any assets on more depth on the back-end. Trust the youth, they're working out quite well now and will continue to get better as things move along.
I also don't like the idea of acquiring a "ho hum" 3rd tier goalie. I still believe in Gillies and Parsons. If Rittich goes down, the net is going to Smith - and as much as I've ragged on him, there's also the opportunity for the old grizzled veteran to step up and write a fairy tale ending to his career.
I'm intrigued by Schenn, Duchene and Stone the most. We can handle one more big contract up front next season assuming Frolik and Stone can be moved along at the draft or sometime in the off-season. I think Schenn or Duchene moving in to centre Bennett and Neal, allowing Jankowski to play wing with Ryan on the 4th makes us incredibly dangerous. Adding Stone would result in a bit of juggling on who plays wing where, but the added depth - and elite level depth at that, is always a positive.
I'd happily pay a 1st (or two) + if it meant an extended Duchene or Stone ended up here.

Im hoping that the biggest deadline acquisition will be James Neal.

Missed Neal, but the point remains and as you mention, the Dmen are green as a group when it comes to the playoffs.
Getting a veteran LD is BT's own primary goal if I were to guess.
Muzzin is likely a pipe dream though, he would fetch a tidy return.

I wouldn't be upset with the Flames spending for a top 6. This is a good year for the Flames to go deep, not saying they need to go all in, but opportunities like this aren't guaranteed every year so they need to take advantage of the position they are in.

My guess is they are looking at Hagelin or Clifford and not Muzzin.
