Tens of thousands of passengers have been disrupted by drones flying over one of the UK's busiest airports.
Gatwick's runway has been shut since Wednesday night, as devices have been repeatedly flying over the airfield.
Sussex Police said it was not terror-related but a "deliberate act" of disruption, using "industrial specification" drones.
About 110,000 passengers on 760 flights were due to fly on Thursday. Disruption could last "several days".
The UK Airprox Board assesses incidents involving drones and keeps a log of all reports.
In one incident last year, for example, a pilot flying over Manchester saw a red "football-sized" drone passing down the left hand side of the aircraft.
In another, a plane leaving Glasgow narrowly missed a drone. The pilot, in that case, said the crew only had three seconds of warning and there was "no time to take avoiding action".

surprised its not got its own thread really, one of the largest airports in Europe, second largest in the UK closed for almost 24 hours, still closed as we speak, police essentially powerless

I wonder how long until we start seeing weaponized drones used in attacks in the US.

This feels like someone is testing out a cheap way to disrupt air travel.
I'm no drone expert, but what's the effective range of the controller with something like this.
Is it something that can be frequency jammed?

Why not train birds to drop feral cats on these drones?

The DJI Mavic Pro is $1000 and the range is like 4 miles.

"Sussex police said they were pursuing several significant lines of inquiry and that an environmental protest was a possibility."
Wouldn't that be something.

Objects flying through the air? Who you gonna call?
Sorted.
Unwanted flying objects should be no issue in the Country that these people inhabit.

More sophisticated ones with GPS and IMUs can be programmed to follow a course. No need for remote control.

One story I read suggested that drone users are unaware of the dangers of operating a drone near an airport.
To me you would have to be some kind of stupid user not to see the issue

I thought the more sophisticated drones had no fly zones preprogrammed into them?

It's scary to think that there isn't much that can be done to protect airspace near and over airports from somebody wanting to cause disruptions.

These idiots obviously have too much time and money. $50000 fine and a year in prison would be fitting.
