And that's why Gio will only get a couple of games. They've had to review a few hits of his lately in the past year. They will do it to send a message.
Just because he hasn't been suspended in the past, doesn't mean this one will make it, and we should be very happy if he doesn't get suspended.
He's taken out Aho, Fowler, and now likely Koivu for extended periods, all knee on knee that needed reviewing in the past year.
Koivu didn't look too bad as he skated and chirped Gio in the penalty box.

You watch, when the chips are down the NHL will suspend Gio for two games so he can't play against the Oilers.
Yup. Gotta give Team McDoofus a chance to even the season series and regain some dignity.
Losing Gio for any length of time does not bode well for the Flames. The dude anchors our entire D corps and he's our best shutdown D man against the league's top lines. Without that anchor, it's gonna get pretty messy in our own zone for a couple of games.
Ah I see. Dumba is a wizard and after hitting Backlund in the head he levitated in mid air to admire his hit. Got it.
The transfer of kinetic energy and angular momentum in hockey hits very often causes players to rise up. In fact, players often “jump” into hits just before they give them (without their skates leaving the ground before contact) - this is legal. Players do it to add upwards momentum to the whole equation, which means that the target player is less likely to be able to remain in control after being hit.
Again, this is legal, and when timed right, is very effective.
I hope Koivu is okay. Knee injuries at his age are no joke.
Yup. Looking at the play, its hard to see where he might have gotten injured from - if there was an injury, it appears to be somewhat of a freak injury. Koivu doesn’t hit anything too hard against the boards or the ice.
It's mind boggling to me to see Flames fans of all people saying the Dumba hit was clean. There are images going around after his head has already been hit trying to make the claim that his chest and head got hit at the same time. If you watch the video, that is a split second after his head has already been pushed back. His head was out in front of his body and was the initial point of contact.
I get that people like open ice hits but you can't target the head or make it the main point of contact any more. It was a clean hit years ago but isn't anymore.
The league is a ####ing joke with its discipline consistency. How Kunitz had nothing, Dumba gets nothing and Giordano is getting a suspension is an absolute joke.
I know I'm a homer but small market teams like Calgary always seems to get screwed when it comes to suspensions etc. If a guy pulled what Mantha and that other yappy little bugger on the bench interfering did to Hamonic last year to someone on the Leafs they would have had the book thrown at them, seems like borderline transgressions against the flames go unpunished more often than not.

How? It was a dirty hit. People need to stop being such homers if u switched around the teams everyone would be crying for blood. Stop acting like Oilers fans
You have to drive upwards to counter momentum. It’s not malicious, it’s physics.
Here’s a good example, similar point of contact, Gio almost flat footed though and he still pops up into the air.
that's exactly the point, Gio was flatfooted so him going into the air is him recovering after contact. Dumba was skating at Backlund and also puts an upward trajectory on his hit, which is what caused him to go in the air.
(Bennett did almost the same thing to Nurse but less of a jump and didn't make head contact)
If that hit happens in a close game in the 2nd period I don't have a huge problem with it, I do think its a bit predatory but hockey is a rough game and I think some onus goes on the player to be aware of their surroundings.
However the game was over, he was headhunting AND he wouldn't answer the bell for it afterwards - that's the biggest issue that I have with it.

Kunitz and Parros won a Cup together so they're probably good buddies.
I could have sworn they suspended for launching now, and Dumba definitely launches. This seems like a regression in precedence for head contact. I don't understand how he's not sitting a game.

It's the lack of consistency and different interpretations of the same scenarios that make people's blood boil.
