Let's poke at that.
The blue ring was built, I think over 5 years ago? But it is help up as the example of bad public art. Now we have the Bowfort Tables
So that's two.
Are there others? You claim they keep choosing projects like this that look "tacky and cheap" but are there other examples that actually show that this is a consistent pattern? Or are they exceptions?
Is there an actual concern here or is this Rick Bell Silly Hall fed perception?

I actually think the animal engravings in roadway underpasses look tacky and cheap. I'm legitimately surprised so many like them.
This is another example of why art decisions should be taken away from the populace.

And then given to who? Artists? Like they know whats good, they're the ones selling us this crap in the first place!

No. I did not say that. Did I?
Man the trend on this site to take what someone is saying and twist it around is really irritating.
What makes art interesting is having a range...Different styles, approaches and techniques.
What makes art boring is having a narrow focus. Only popular. Only controversial. Only paintings. Whatever.
That is what makes it boring.
I want to see a lot of different stuff. I probably will like some of it and hate some of it. But the range is what makes having a public art program overall interesting.

People already consume lots of popular art. Most people in Calgary happily pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year on "art" in the form of entertainment, and consumer products for their home. Public art should fit in contrast to that, of course it needs to be aesthetically appealing, and reflective of the city but it would be redundant to spend so much on it and have it be too similar to what Calgarians are already consuming, which is essentially pop culture.

I can't say that I like it. It's a monochromatic nest that sort of looks too much like Andalusian bull horns. But the price is what I find really offensive. You can have this 40 foot tall Space Elephant by Salvador Dali delivered to your front door step for 1.8 million CAD and that includes a 40% mark up to the nice dealer selling it to you. That puts a bronze sculpture poured in a foundry in Switzerland based of an original maquette by one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th century about 20% more expensive than this one.

Re: Ascend, can't really judge it until we see how it looks with the acrylic prisms. Those are make or break for it IMO.

The reason these things all cost so much, is no one in their right mind would commission a piece of public art in Calgary without allocating funds for a new identity, full time security, and a residence somewhere they can stay undetected for after the death threats start rolling in.

There was a Mythbusters episode where they tried to construct a device to ignite ships at a distance using mirrors, but it failed. If only they had the big metal ball bearing.
