No.
Not even Kailer Yamamoto and his vaunted draft pedigree can save the Oilers.
No one can.
No one.

I think Jackisback is clearly a closet Oilers fan. Those seriously sound like Oiler fanboy numbers.

Can't wait for all the predictive guys to still be wrong on the oilers.
All the analytics experts are saying "there is no way this team was as good as two years ago, and theres no way they are as bad as last year"
However, They are always just one injury away from being a total dumpster fire again...
Can't wait for them to fail to live up to even the 19th place predictions

Darnell Nurse will not attend Oilers camp without a new contract
https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/h...a-new-contract
Quote:
As Nurse skates informally with his teammates at Rogers Place, nothing is imminent on the contract front, according to agent Anton Thun.
“This is an organization I want to be a part of obviously,” said Nurse, who won’t be at camp without a new deal. “Hopefully I’m out there first day (camp physicals)”
“I’m not the only guy (restricted free-agent) in this position. There’s (Shea) Theodore and (Josh) Morrissey still waiting too.”
The Oilers don’t have the cap room to sign Nurse to a long-term, big money deal like Vegas with Theodore ($8.6 million in space) and Winnipeg ($10.8 million), with their shutdown D Morrissey.

It feels good to see captain crunchs premonitions of the Oilers being in cap trouble for the last 2 years finally coming true.

A team like the Caps could easily afford to give up a 1st and 3rd rounder if they wished to up it a little, and Nurse at the current level would be worth that.
Either way Nurse is not taking a home discount, he smells blood in the water.

I wonder if paying a backup goalie $2.5 million is looking to be a poor decision, and they would have been better off giving a bit of that to Nurse. An extra million would have gone a long way in the negotiation.

If he were offer sheeted he'd be a fool not to take any offer just to get out that place and maybe actually develop into a better player

They'd be screwed if he were offer sheeted.
Therefore someone should do it. Maybe the Bs just to make Chia sweat.

It's hilarious that the Oilers could lose Nurse on a $4M offer sheet for a 2nd round draft pick. I really hope some team does write one up for him. If he was smart, he would sign it and get out of that tire fire while the gettin's good.
The Oilers' whole salary structure is completely messed up. With a top-heavy salary structure, the team needs to supplement McDavid and Draisaitl with cheap, young assets on entry-level or bridge contracts. If I were Chia, I'd be trading every player over 21 for whatever assets I could get in return, and parlay those multiple returns into top five draft picks. I'm talking about burning the current team to the ground. The loss of veteran NHL players would result in a terrible record and a lottery draft choice. The Oilers really need to have one top five and another top five to ten pick in each of the next three drafts. Those six players should be nearly NHL-ready, and able to step in to fill out the core that retains only McDavid and Draisaitl from the current group. THEN they can supplement with second-tier prospects from the farm and free agent signings.
I think this is the only way to save the Oilers, at least until the end of the Lucic contract, but fortunately, they seem to think that their window to win is open now.
But in theory, it could save them...
(Waits for TextCritic's inevitable rebuttal)

Nurse for a 2nd rounder, hell yeah, that's asset management. If you can flip Stone.
Can an offer sheeted player be traded immediately? I know a waiver claim has to stay on the roster for a certain time.

The problem with this thread's title is that by the definition of the term, we should all only be pretending to derive joy from Chia's misfortune.
Who's pretending?
Edit: just realized I was referring to schadenfraud, not schadenfraude

Why would it be pretending? The actual term doesn't involve pretending.

Just for hilarity sake, if the Oilers has to buy out Lucic, what could the dollar amount look like?

His contract is effectively buyout-proof. Because of the way it's structured (heavy on signing bonuses, which aren't part of a buyout), there would be very little cap or money savings on a buyout.

I guess I was just going from the Urban Dictionary definition, not realizing that it was in fact a different word.
