What are you talking about? Why even say such a silly statement when you have no idea about what was on the table, and what was preferred.

Players have different values to different teams. Given the age of the guys they gave up, I doubt Carolina would have had much interest in Frolik as part of the return.

Yeah, I don't think it's really close either. Ferland had almost as many goals as Bennett had points and Frolik looked like he regressed a bit last year. Given the choice I think most people would take Ferland. A case could be made for Bennett based on age but Frolik? No.

I could see a contender wanting Frolik as a deadline add but not Carolina and not 8n the offseason. With Philly wanting a PK specialist, I could see them wanting him but I do t know if the Flames want to trade him now. I would give them just about anything they want for Carter Hart...

Totally off topic, which shouldn't really matter since this whole thread has kind of lost its own plot, but I was taking a look at Carter Hart just now and look at this misleading article title that popped up.
NHL Goalie Prospect Carter Hart Says So Long Twitter Hello Pro Life
Doesn't it read as though he was leaving twitter because of an anti-abortion stance?

I meant if another team were to trade for him, the team would be a contender. I could see the Flames trading him if they thought a young guy could step in

A lot of apples and oranges in this comparison.
Ferland is a physical winger with skill. He can put the puck in the net and play up with good players. He's pretty inconsistent, and certainly not a big help in his own zone.
Frolik is a plug and play winger than makes his linemates better. His offensive game is eroding but he's an elite possession driving player that can play a caddy role on an offensive line or be a key piece of a shut down line.
Bennett is a young, former 4th overall pick with the whole package of skill, but through three seasons and two coaches hasn't found his niche at the NHL level. He's not good enough in his own zone to grab a shut down role, and not consistent enough offensively to play top six. His value is his upside and his age.
Why compare the three ... they all do different things.
Today's Flames needs Ferland less than last year's Flames though. Clearly.

I'll just repeat what others have already said. Six more years of Hanifin and Lindholm for under $10M.
The GM is not the problem.

But he’s dumb for trading Ferland. Ferland >>>>> Bennett/Frolik apparently.

I would add to this that from my eye test he seems to get better later in the season, for big games, and the two times he participated in the playoff he was a monster.
His issues are totally different then a guy who can't ever put it together or disappears when the pressure increases.
Some of that is consistency, which generally gets better as players get a bit older. Some of that is linemates, because Brower & Hathaway were the best the Flames could give him.
I also think the increased intensity and looser interpretation of the rules help a guy like Bennett shine.
I get why people want him to be a stud all year, but, as long as we get in the playoffs, having a bunch of guys like Bennett it would only help. Poorer early season play = worse overall numbers = brings down the cap hit.
Personally, I salivate at the idea of a playoff line of Tkachuk - Playoff Bennett - Neal giving teams fits while Jankowski - Backland - Frolik suffocate teams top lines, leaving Gaudreau to do Gaudreau things with Monahan & Lindholm.

People have Neal slotted on the top line and thats perfectly fine, they're not likely wrong.
However, if we're talking about igniting scoring for say the top 3 lines. I feel James Neal would do best playing with Janko and Bennett. Someone to drag them up like Johnny and Monahan did for Ferland.
Lindholm is a great fit on the top line IMO. Neal score 20 in his sleep so everyone says, so why not use him to help the two players we need more out of. IIRC, those two kids were coming along quite nicely when they had Jagr on their wing. Neal will do the same.

I agree with Lindholm being on the top line with Gaudreau and Monahan so we can even out the scoring. Maybe put Neal with Gaudreau and Monahan in the 3rd if we really need a goal. I disagree that Neal should slot with Bennett and Janko. Don’t think he’d sign here if he was getting top 6 ice time. I think Neal with Tkachuk and Backlund would be a perfect fit. Czarnik is my ideal candidate to slow on the right side with Jankowski and Bennett. Him developing chemistry with those two would be a good idea.

The most exciting thing about this camp for me, outside the obvious roster battles (top line rw, 4th line, 5-7 dmen, backup goalie), is the chance we see a depth chart shuffle at center. We all have the depth order, after Monahan of course, as Backlund, Ryan, Jankowski.
What if Jankowski comes in and pushes for a 2nd line C spot, what if Ryan shows strong chemistry with Tkachuk?
I like Backlund, but I would be pleasantly surprised to see Jankowski make some noise this camp.

Janko-Bennett should not be a pairing that gets top 9 minutes on this team again. Major weak point for us last year.
I think Lindholm should be our 2c. Give bennett one last chance to prove himself and let tkachuk take on more of an o role. Janko as the 4th line c unless bennett flops again then let him take 2lw.
Gaudreau-monahan-neal
Bennett-lindholm-tkachuk
Frolik-backlund-ryan
Rychel-jankowski-Czarnik
Mangaipane/foo/lazar to fill.
I was actually encouraged by the progress lazar was making near the end of last season. I would be interested to see how he comes into camp with all of this new competition on the 4th line!

Devil's advocate: Bennett will be cheap depth going forward barring a monster year and Frolik is a rock-sold third line (and PK) option. Where would Ferland fit in after the Flames upgraded their top six, and how would he fit in cap-wise?

Blame coach for playing them with a 6th line player (Hathaway) because they were exceptional with Jagr

There were times last year when Bennett was the best player on the ice. It seemed like every time he showed those glimpses, GG would follow it up by changing his line mates, changing his position, or reduce his ice time. GG was the worst thing that could have happened to the development of Bennett.
And this isn't a fresh take, I've been saying this for at least a year.
