Another team could already have picked him up. Granted, the salary wasn't set, but it was sure predictable - most people here pegged it.

Sure, but there's a massive difference between middle of summer and end of training camp, even if he had a contract already set. Right now most teams are waiting for training camp to see what they have in their young and acquired players. There are very few bottom pairing defensemen that wouldn't pass through waivers right now. No reason to pick up a player off waivers and be forced to keep a player in the NHL the entire season when you have 1/2 the summer left yet. There will be a few teams who don't like what they see during training camp. Those are the teams that will snag a player like Kulak if he demonstrates that he is a NHL player during training camp.

But I think they have to put him on waivers before buying him out, dont they?

Getting a one way deal was key for Kulak. No way should Kulak (or any other player) accept a two way deal if they have a shot at a one way. This is Kulak's best shot at sticking in the NHL.

Kulak played 71 games last year. I'm willing to bet that he's "stuck" in the NHL.

He beat out Bartkowski for playing time though. And really, that was pretty much Bartkowski playing himself off the team early on.

Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington are now breathing down his neck. He just cleared waivers. I don't think he's at all a bonafide NHL player and could easily see him, like Wotherspoon, looking for NHL opportunities in a year or two.

I would say both sides should be both happy and unhappy with this.

It's an and statement, not or. He didn't play 180 games yet.

I can’t believe you guys are wasting this much energy and time arguing over a player that is clearly a 6-7 dman at best. I don’t think it matters which one of you are right because I doubt he’s on this team longer than this season at best. He’s easily replaceable, with minor free agents and or our own home grown talent.

I was disappointed that the arbitrator decided a one way contract on a player who has not fully established after only one NHL season he is 100% a full time NHL level D man. I think the Flames should still have the choice on a 2 way if needed.

I suppose Rittich's agent also failed him, signing for $800k as opposed to $650k??

By some logic in this thread, Rittich's 800k contract (despite being one-way) means he is more likely to start in the minors compared to Gillies and his slightly cheaper two-way contract.

It's summer. The only thing going on with the Flames is this stuff.

You can't call me hard to follow and then have Kulak demoted for a goaltender!

The idea that Kulak’s NHL career may be jeopardy because he should have agreed to play for a little less money is pretty silly IMO.

If this is his last NHL season then his agent did a hell of a job getting him every dollar he could. Now it’s up to him.

I don't know if I agree.
How do you rank Kulak? Is he a 3rd pairing defenseman for a top 15 club?
I don't think he is. Especially with his spot so vulnerable.

And if he's befit a non-playoff team's last pairing, he'll continually be challenged --- a minimum salary makes him that much more attractive. I do believe, those $200k in savings make a difference.
