^It would be a lot easier to sell a McMahon replacement with more major events tied to it, not less.

This city needs a new world-class, multi-use stadium (preferably indoor) in the worst way. Embarrassing we're now lagging behind smaller cities like Regina and Winnipeg in terms of facilities like this.

Yeah it is getting ridiculous that this city is sooo behind when it comes to sporting facilities and venues. In major need of a field house, stadium, and arena.

When it comes to sporting venues in comparison to any other major Canadian city, Calgary is dead last.
I don't mind passing on World Cup bid, since I don't think they would have a shot at hosting anyway. Edmonton would get the Albertan matches since they've already got a large capacity venue that's suitable. But a new football/major event stadium is needed.

Looks like Morocco is finding creative ways to line the pockets of Blatter, who is allowed to be bought off now, and the Asian, South American and African country federations may all get a piece of the cash pie to swing their vote.
Likely the reason the NA bid was pushing to get the proposal through without competitors, knowing that some country like Morocco would pull a stunt like this.
Vote is in June.

While FIFA corruption would not surprise me it could also be due to growing anti-Americanism. Morocco also has the benefit of less travel and being in the same time zone as Europe.

Is there an appetite from the Canadian taxpayer to cover both the 2026 Word Cup and the Winter Olympics should Calgary decide to go ahead with the bid? Each event on it's own would involve a pretty significant amount of money from the feds, both events would be a huge financial outlay.

We've got a freewheeling Federal Government at the moment, spend it while its there!

Vancouver will no longer be a part of a 2026 bid.

Sportsnet 650 commentator Perry Solkowski reports that the United 2026 committee has informed Vancouver they are no longer a part of the bidding process after the city failed to meet the deadline.

What an absolute joke, there needs to be a deep look into this and how it happened
At least we have Seattle close if they get some games, but how does this happen

I can probably tell ya. LML'ers, over-analyzing an approval process, to the point they exhaust the application.

Organizers were probably banking on being able to market the Seattle -- Vancouver commute with matches in both cities.
B.C. Place was an excellent venue for the Women's World Cup in 2015.
Vancouver has been a hub for the women's team for years, training out of Fortius and many of the players, including now men's coach Herdman, call the city home (not sure about the men's players). There's always been a strong connection between Vancouver and Canada Soccer.
From a distance, this seems like a shocking decision. Living in Calgary, I don't know the ins and outs of politics in that city or the province like I do here. Was there infighting between politicians or parties when it came to hosting the event? Worry about the cost of security? Laying down grass?
I believe a stipulation of the United bid, at least on the Canadian end, is there has to be representation from the west and east of the country. That only leaves Edmonton. Commonwealth is a serviceable stadium, but not like B.C. Place -- near hotels, downtown, plenty of restaurants, transit, clean etc. It seems like a marketing dream.

Horgan thought the deadline was Friday. Either way, the blank cheque FIFA were asking for was always going to be a hard sell in a province that's in the midst of two major crisis that will likely require massive investment to address.

Is there a massive investment though? I thought that there 3-4 games at each of the Canadian venues or so.
Sure, security for the field and hotels fifa and the teams are in. Sure, heightened, but BC Place holding WWc and Olympics and 60k concerts, it’s infrastructure and plans are in place and utilized regularly.
Hardly writing blank cheque for FIFA, that’s just code for “I haven’t really asked how much it may cost, and I’m opposed to it anyways based on party lines, and not going to be anywhere near the legislature in 8 years, so who cares”

I disagree. It likely would have been a lot like the Olympics - Early grumbling (and a riot), followed by a complete mental readjustment to "man, that was the best thing ever!"

Canada in general should pull out based on those demands.
