The Athletic has a blurb about something on that day but involving Dorian not Melnyk
Unspoken is the role a prickly meeting between Dorion and the players that took place in the Senators dressing room after a loss to the St. Louis Blues in late January.

Yes that was confirmed by other people at TSN as proved earlier in this thread.
The Melnyk one looks made up but has a hint of credibility because of Melnyk's reputation. I can't find anyone besides this one random twitter account reporting it.

It is fake. It's a screenshot of an article that doesn't exist anywhere. The consensus seems to be "yeah, not real, but the fact that it's even for a moment believable tells you everything you need to know about the situation there".
Unfortunately it's gained traction as if it were real and you know someone's going to ask someone in the organization to confirm it, which is the sort of tabloidy thing that's bad for sports journalism.

Would be some sort of cap circumvention I’m guessing, as well.

I imagine it is a story that was twisted through a fun game of internet telephone and is now regurgitated as fact..... On the other hand though it is Melnyk

Are the Flames one of the teams that could manage that Cap hit of Ryan/Karlsson?
Just looking hypothetically:
To Ottawa:
Brodie 4.65
Frolik 4.3
Stone 3.5 ~ 12.45 mill
19 1st
Kylington
To Flames:
Karlsson 6.5 (reup to 9 mill by 19/20 season)
Ryan 7.5 (20 % retained = 6 mill per)
Cole 2.1 ~ 14.6 mill
Gaudreau ~ Monahan ~ Ryan
Tkachuk ~ Backlund ~ Bennett
Ferland ~ Jankowski ~ Versteeg
Brouwer ~ Stajan ~ Lazar
Giordano ~ Karlsson
Cole ~ Hamilton
Kulak ~ Hamonic
Andersson
Smith
Rittich/Gillies
Offseason:
Stajan ~ Gone x 3.25
Brouwer ~ Traded/Bought out Gone x 4.5 mill
Gaudeau (6.75) ~ Monahan (6.375) ~ Ryan (6) / Total 19.125
Tkachuk (6.5) ~ Backlund (5.35) ~ Bennett (4.5) / Total 15.85
Ferland (4.5) ~ Jankowski (2.5) ~ Lazar (1.5) / Total 9.5
Giordano (6.75) ~ Karlsson (9) / Total 15.75
Cole (3) ~ Hamilton (5.75) / Total 8.75
Kulak (2.5) ~ Hamonic (3.858) / Total 6.358
Smith (4.25 ~ don't know retention)
Rittich (1.5) ~ Total 5 mill lets say
With no 4th line listed and assumed pay raises for players like Tkachuk/Bennett/Ferland/Janko ect. I see us being in cap hell by 2020.
I think you can take us out of it ~ I just don't see how we could bring em in.

Karlsson at $9M? I think he wants more than that. That's merely Draisaitl territory.

I don't think that offer would get Ottawa interested.
I think the Flames best bet would be to offer Hamilton and then the Flames could run:
Giordano-Brodie
Karlsson-Hamonic
Karlsson would really put the Flames over the top, and really super charge them for the next few seasons which seems to be the window Brad is trying to compete in.

Yeah,....no way Karlsons next deal doesnt start with an 11 or 12 for the AAV.
Maybe even more. He could command up to 14 per if its strictly about the money for him.

Remember when Oiler fans thought McDavid would sign for $9.7? LOL.

He's one of the best players in the game, he'll get somewhere between Patrick Kane and Connor McDavid.

If Flames were comfortably in a playoff position I would offer Hamilton++ for him as he is prob the best D Man in the league.
I would hate for the flames to make that deal right now though and miss playoffs, then overpay karlsson.
Good chance Hamilton continues to improve and become one of the most elite D in the league (also on a very cap friendly contract). And with Karlsson's ankle issues the trade may haunt us in the end. Not to mention the other assets the flames would have to give up.
I would be ok offering Brodie as a centrepiece. Something like;
Brodie
Fox
Dube
pick/picks

Per source, the Montreal Canadiens have been engaged as a third-party team in an Erik Karlsson trade.

OTT will need a 3rd party in every deal just to do the retaining.

One note — if a trade with Tampa Bay materializes *and* it includes Bobby Ryan, Montreal and/or Vegas may be involved for cap reasons. Multiple scenarios talked about on this front.

So is Tampa the only team in this thing that is getting Karlsson?

So we're trading Brodie, Kylington and Brouwer for Ryan, Oduya and an Ottawa 1st?
I'd rather keep Brouwer at his contract than have Ryan at his contract, I'd way way way rather have Brodie than Oduya, and Kylington is looking like a mid to late first guy a few seasons after his draft.

Not sure if he is joking or not, but Commodore says Karlsson to Vegas.
edit: now he is also saying Ryan is going to Vegas too.
