Some pretty simple rules that would resolve pretty much everything that is being discussed:

1) Put anything that is close to NSFW behind the NSFW tags. If someone posts something close to NSFW without tags, put a tag on it for them. If they do it again, sin bin them for a week. If people complain about images behind NSFW tags, then IP ban the complainers to protect their sensitive eyes.

2) Put posters who personally attack others in the sin bin for a week. If they do it again, then IP ban them.

Done.

Can we move on?

Reasonable, but who draws the line on a personal attack? Can you call me an idiot and we can live with ourselves afterward? Or would that warrant a banning in your eyes? I think its silly to assert that calling someone out on their #### is bannable because feelings. Threats? sure! But lets not make people afraid to counter opinions. And yes, I would say anything I say here to someones face.

Projection? No, those are like the only two things that are guaranteed to get delt with.

Please enlighten us with how the mods are ruining the fun? Because you clearly see them dealing with things that I don’t. The topic at hand is putting a bouncy boob gif behind NSFW tags, and the only thing I know that they 100% crack down on is straight up racism, so tell us, what are they cracking down on that ruins the fun?

It does seem like this comes up every 5 or so years. Anyone remember that weird and hastily-abandoned "reputation" system we had for a little bit? I think it's a good thing that Bingo & the mods seem to engage in this kind of conversation when they feel that things are bubbling up.

I've never been disciplined, but I also don't post very much. I do, however, read a LOT of this forum throughout most of my day, including at work. I understand and agree with the moderation team leaning more towards "if it's borderline, NSFW it". I also, however, think that those who are worried about coming across questionable or borderline content at work can take a little more responsibility.

This board and its interface are pretty customizable. For instance, you can turn off avatars, signatures, AND images forum-wide from your User CP. Instead of the image showing up, it's a link to the image which I have found is much better when your boss is walking past your desk (kinda like right now).

My $0.02.

While the .gif is what started the entire chain, it has obviously uncovered a much deeper nerve within the community.

I've come to the table with my ideas, hoping we can make this place better. This is bigger then NSFW and let's move on.

A great point for the community, and mods, to come together, listen to feedback (and go from there).

The day the forum ever implements a Reddit style up/down vote system is the day I quit. You want chaos and overmoderation go take a look at Reddit.

The CP mods are doing a fine job. I'm fine with the NSFW gifs being hidden behind the tag, its not ruining fun or being over modded. Some people may not want to have those pop up on work computers. They aren't silencing the majority by asking for a simple request.

A poster respectfully tried to point out the differing worldviews on treaties between European settlers and first nations and you basically took glee in the fact that they had their land stolen without having their treaty promises fulfilled.

That's pretty god damn racist.

It's basically the pack savaging a transgressor past the point of simple dissent, and into a kind of tribal shaming. It's ugly behaviour anywhere, but I see it here more often than most forums.

I suppose it depends on how you feel about enforcing social norms. Obviously, a lot of people take great satisfaction in enforcing conformity. Which is why we get the bubble culture of today's social media, with people associating almost exclusively with those who they agree with. Others prefer a more genuinely diverse and tolerant social environment.
I take the point of the first part of your post. But I have difficulty with this idea that “enforcement of conformity” is a problem on this forum. I don’t even really know what that means. It’s an anonymous forum. No one is obviously enforcing conformity in terms of appearances or lifestyles on this forum. The only “conformity” I can therefore think of is some sort of “conformity of ideas (or values)”. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for that concern(if that is your concern). If you can’t defend your ideas or values on an anonymous Internet forum, then they probably aren’t very good ideas or values.

If I’m totally missing your point, I apologize.

The mods do (as they have always done). It isn't too difficult to tell the difference between an attack on someone's position and an attack on them personally. If it is close, then the mods should err on the side of caution (maybe just delete the comment).

Anyways, the mods already do this, so it's not like we need to re-invent the wheel.

The only thing from my post that is different from current standards is to allow all of these 'sexy gifs' so long as they are under a NSFW tag.

If you will be offended by a NSFW image, don't click on it.
If your employer/wife/dog will get mad if you see a girl's shoulder, then don't click on it.

As has been said a few times in the thread, people filing hurt feelings reports, or armchair mods claiming some posts cross the line because people don't want someone to get offended is ruining the fun. Its censorship by definition

I think correctness resides with the owner of the site. Don't like the extra effort of NSFW tags? You're an adult, find a site that works for you then.

Oh? I claimed racial superiority? I don't remember that part. I'm pretty sure discussion on land claims and treaty failure discussion is not racism

I am late to this discussion and didn't know about the background on the topic (the post-game gif that caused the storm), but I would say that the mods in most cases are doing a good job, although I also do want to see an up-to-date list of who are the mods here (it is more like the invisible hands right now), and maybe for the posters who got banned, have a list of their sentence length and a general description as to why they got banned so that others won't repeat the same problem.

Also, I would say that if a thread got locked/deleted, don't start another thread asking why it is gone.

I personally don't see any harm about both gifs from StrykerSteve, but if people were making inappropriate comments about them (the gifs in specific) then I suppose it was the right move for the mods to shut them down.

Entirely this site is way too PC and sensitive, and the mods have bought into that entirely. What it has done, I've noticed in the last few years is turned this into a much more "sterile" environment where fun posts are minimally tolerated. The recent incidents are just the peak of the sensitivity movement and really a dark time to be involved in a discussion forum. There are weirdo's everywhere, there are creeps everywhere, but for those of us who are adults and can act accordingly, the mods are ruining the fun for everyone. It may sound dramatic, but its a striking parallel to say its the exact same thing terrorism did to travel, that killers have done to firearms. An over reaction to a few that people could very easily ignore is really ruining the experience for the remaining majority to then have to conform to a reduced experience to keep a few people happy.

Happy moderating!
Well, as a moderator on a different board for over 7 years, I think the mods on this board do a terrific job and I would argue that they let people have "fun" by being very lenient with content that would immediately be removed on other boards. I also know that it is a thankless job, so consider this my thank you to all the mods on this board.

You do realize that is major part of the reason why Indigenous people are marginalized and impoverished today, don't you?

That is something to laugh about and celebrate in your world?

I'm not sure why there is so much focus on NSFW tags, I don't recall mentioning putting things behind tags was ever an issue, just so we are clear. I'm saying when even things behind tags get moderated out that's a bit much in the same vain, to protect people from feeling offended. I personally don't care what gets posted. Neither should you. Don't like it, don't click on it, but don't make the decision for me

Guy's, lets not derail this thread. This is the kind of stuff that can be debated in OT or PMs.

I think this is the mods trying to teach us what a moderator-less board would be like by allowing this to go on.

End it guys. Take it somewhere else.

How did Indigenous people get dragged into this?

this is ultimately the real answer

sleeping on it, i think i took issue with this because the culture on this site frankly sucks these days. It's barely a flames fan board anymore aside from a handful of posters and becoming more and more just a dumping ground for people to vent about 4th liners, coaching decisions and farm team tweeners not getting a shot in the big leagues. instead of moderating excessive toxicity, the focus is on what i personally think are total non-issues. this is ultimately my bad because it really doesnt matter what i think, its not my site. so i definitely respect the nws tag

now, you guys could be editing or removing poster x's 15th consecutive "brouwer missed that pass, what a plug" posts, but in general this place hasn't been anywhere close to the site i joined a few years ago. nothing you can really do from a moderation perspective on that front through unless you start to thought police people, but that's even worse
