Without being able to match lines and keep Backlund water-skiing behind McDavid this will be a tough test.
Hopefully our depth at defense can keep Connor off the scoresheet enough that our deeper forward group can sneak a couple by Talbot and steal a game here tonight.
I want to crush the Oilers, all my greaser friends are all cocky about sweeping the Flames last season. Yet they forgot about the crushing the Flames gave em for the past decade.
Nothing would be better then an kick to the nads of the collective oilers fanbase tonight.
They've lost the last 7 season openers, and have only one won of the last 14
DUE
Pretty tough to be confident in the face of that.
A record that consistent simply can't be a fluke. And yet there are very few people on the ice in common between those 14 seasons. Similar to the Pond Curse. What gives?
You're one of those guys that has to get to that dark place so you're absolutely prepared if things don't go well.
But things aren't all that rosy in Edmonton either.
They've had a sketchy pre season from the guys they felt were destined to be top 4 defensemen. You know things are bad when David Staples starts to get worried.
They've already converted their amazing second line center back to a winger meaning their attack is centered on one line.
Their replacement for Eberle is now centering the third line.
Their 2016 pick is back in the AHL for seasoning.
They suddenly have massive expectations on them for the first time since I had hair.

I just want the Flames to finish the game with some dignity. I don't want to get blown out and start questioning Smith and the D to start the season. We usually lose the opener, I'm just hoping it's a loss we can build off. A win would be a pleasant surprise
Christ is this ever a defeatist attitude.
These aren't the dynasty Oilers incarnate for Pete's sake.
Brad has built a very solid team. There are question marks, but it's not a forgone conclusion that the Oilers are the superior team. I see some glaring holes in their roster, to be honest.

I'm looking forward to Bennett punching McD in the face.
Oh man, would I ever love to see this. Please Benny do this tonight. And Sam has a sweet beard to protect himself from retaliatory punches. Good plan Sam.
Flames win 5-4. Ferland scores first on a greasy goal in the first 5 minutes of the first to silence the crowd. Smith is awesome and we win a season opener against the Oilers to begin the streak again. 10 years of domination of the coilers by the Flames.
So pumped!

My comment was for game #1, not the season. The Flames are historically bad on opening night
For all the hype the Oilers really are a one line team, but a really good one line. The fact that there are now two defensive pairings that I would have no problem playing against that top line makes a huge difference over last year.
I'm sure they will be able to get a shift or two away from the 4, but my only major worry is the power plays. Play smart and disciplined and roll your lines and the Flames will be able to roll over the lopsided Oilers. Get to Talbot early, I would love nothing more than to refer to him as Ta7bot all winter.
The Snek craves a win. All glory to the Snek.

It is still pretty damned defeatist. I have seen the record and I understand the angst. But I don't fathom why anyone would choose misery and moral victories for something as fickle as the potential outcome of opening night.
The Flames are going to win. It's fun!

No Ian White this year for a season opener in Edmonton, so no problem.
Get out of the first 5 minutes and first garbage call the stripes are going to grant McD, and we will be fine.
WWE style would be the way Jagr should arrive. After the second period and a tie game, a limo rolls up, and the camera scroll from ground up, and out springs Jagr in a suit. Follows him through the bowels and he ends in the Flames room as they prepare to come out for the third. Massive cheers erupt, and Jagr simply says “It’s go time” to more cheers as they exit the room, and the Flames pot 4 in the 3rd.
