Fam, tonight in #charlottesville, Va., white racists with torches marched towards a church where Black activists were meeting. In 2017.

Don't kid yourself, hatred and intolerance is alive and well everywhere. It's just become more brazen, and more willing to be out in the open given the current leadership in the US.

Sadly, this is what happens when there's an obsession and fixation with identity politics throughout the spectrum, both left and right. All these marches, whether white nationalist marches, black lives matter marches, or dare I say, even some of the rhetoric with various feminist, same-sex and trans movements, present a harmful and divisive zero-sum narrative that people buy into. Us against them.

Seriously, these are literally people wearing swastikas and carrying torches and doing the Hitler Salute, and where are the police and riot gear? If these people were black and unarmed, they'd be outnumbered by the authorities. It's utterly shameful.
Also, the media needs to stop calling these people protesters or demonstrators. These are more than that -- these are Nazis within America, and it's truly sickening and horrifying how backward that country has become. There are probably about six states worth visiting today, and that might be generous.

Is it really though? I mean, any subset of an identity can come up with their reasons for feeling oppressed and victimized, which materializes in various forms of demonstration and expression. When overemphasized and everything is constantly about identity, you have people drawn into their silos without much dialogue in the middle.
For what it's worth, I say this as a visible minority myself. In my opinion, we ought to focus less on identity groups and move back towards the individual.

The difference is that at the heart of BLM (despite various extremists that you'll find in any group) is the idea that black people in America are tired of being incarcerated unfairly/killed by police/kept in a cycle of poverty, etc.
At the heart of feminist marches, there is the idea that women want to be treated equally, are tired of having their rights infringed upon, being left out of the conversation about their own healthcare, etc.
At the heart of pride parades there's the idea that who you love shouldn't matter, that you should be allowed to marry whomever you choose (assuming legal age/consent and all that), be able to be whoever you are, whatever that gender or sexual identity is, and work and live and love without fear of being harmed/fired/evicted.
All these other groups aren't asking for a zero sum game. They don't want to take away the rights of those holding the most power (in America, it's still way easier to be white, and especially male, than anything else. Poor white is still better than poor black. They just want to have those same rights that whites/white men have had all along.
A white supremacist rally, when almost all of the wealthiest people in America are white, when almost all of the politicians in America are white, when almost all of the CEOs in America are white, on and on ad nauseum--is utterly ridiculous.
No one is taking away "white America's" identity. This movement is solely meant as an attempt to keep "others"--people of color, immigrants (legal or otherwise), gay people, trans people--beneath them.

I agree with everything you said but I'm also a non-white dude from Canada. I think there are many southern whites who truly do feel like their history and identity are being taken away. The removal of Confederate flags and statues and monuments is happening. Public parks and schools and streets and other institutions named after heroes of the Confederacy are being renamed. No doubt some of those protesting these changes are racists but many of those have valid concerns about their history being erased. It wouldn't surprise me if there are many protesters tonight who believe slavery was a terrible wrong but also have revered ancestors who fought for the Confederacy and just feel political correctness has gone too far.

Yeah that's the only story we are judging the United States on. It possibly can't be the countless other things wrong with the States.
