Reminds me of what happened to Kodak films. They had 90% of the US market, when they developed the digital camera. However, the product was dropped for fear it would threaten Kodak's photographic film business. As a result other companies began specializing in digital cameras, and Kodak eventually went broke.

Not sure if you are looking for an explanation. Sorry if not!
Its basically a reverse auction. Price starts well above what the market will bare, and then drops until someone bites.
A relative of mine is a flower broker in the Netherlands and this is how he buys all of his product. I have witnessed one of these live when visiting my relative. Its surprisingly entertaining. A large auction might have 10 to 15 digital screens up on the wall, with a track rolling beneath with the carts of flowers up for sale. All the bidders have buttons at their seat. As soon as someone accepts the price, the digital counter on the screen shoots back up for the next item.

On a longer term sale, the store may start with 10 per cent off on everything the first week, 20 per cent off the second week, 30 per cent off the third week, etc. Pretty efficient way of finding out the true market value of the merchandise.

Thanks.
I was just kidding with my comment; did a bad job of making a joke.
My family is originally from Rotterdam and Middleburg in Zeeland.
We pretend to be offended by Dutch doors, uncles, going Dutch etc.
But I honestly didn't know what a Dutch auction is !

My mother's family is from the same area! Dad's family is from the north. I carry a Dutch passport myself (although I have offended a few local customs officers for my "lack of dutch"). But I really love the Zeeland area. Despite being born and raised in Canada I have traveled back a few times and have always felt this weird sense of "home" when there.

Went to the deerfoot meadows store today. Rumour was the cashiers all came in and quit at the same time in the morning. It was a complete gong show. No sales people were available on the floor and it was getting out of hand around noon. Big seller seemed to be Dyson vacuums. Lots of folks sitting off couches holding them as people shopped. 40% off accessories and 20% off appliances and furniture, so not really a great deal in the grand scheme of things.

Is the North Hill Sears still open? I went a year ago looking for an item, and was really put off due to there being virtually no employees on the floor to assist.

Yes. The only store in Calgary that is closing to my knowledge is the Home Store on Glenmore/Heritage.

Sears Canada to ask court for permission to liquidate all remaining stores
Quote:
Sears Canada said Tuesday it plans to seek court approval to begin liquidation of all of its remaining stores and assets.
Sears Canada said that if it gets court approval to begin the process, it expects that liquidation sales at its stores would start no earlier than Oct. 19 and continue for 10 to 14 weeks.

Anyone who's been in Sears over the past few months has to have seen that this was inevitable. There is no inventory, basically, and what remains is clearance level, if that. I was in one over the weekend and just kind of walked around, and it was dismal.

Just realized that the Sears location in North Hill mall - albeit an old, decrepit building - is pretty valuable real estate for another Big Box store. I'm sure something will go in there.

I think there have been plans long cooking for that whole site, can't remember who owns it. Probably won't go ahead in this economy but perhaps this moves things forward with it a bit?

I did something similar and it was like a scene out of 'The Walking Dead.'
It was if there was a Zombie Apocalypse and the only thing that could save us were discount kitchen amenities and a terrified mob looted the place.

I run way too hot for flannel. I'd wake up covered in a film of sweat. I need sheets that breath and are light

Sears owns their parcel, along with the auto center and all the way to 14th. You can tell where the line is, because you have to pay at a different parking machine...
They sold 50% of the site a few years back to a condo developer, I believe someone from Vancouver.
