Bridges aren't cheap though. They're market value and they ensure market value going forward.
Long term deals have their risks, but the gamble is that while you'll probably be paying market value in later years salary wise, the AAV will be skewed downward by otherwise bridge years.
For instance if your projection is:
Bridge
2M
3M
Total Salary 5M
AAV 2.5M
+
5Y Contract
5M
5M
5M
5M
5M
Total Salary 25M
AAV 5M
vs
7Y deal
2.5M
3.5M
4M
5M
5M
5M
5M
Total Salary 30M
AAV 4.29M
The bridge makes sense if you have no idea what you have in a player, or limited confidence in that player. But if you're projecting a significant raise after the bridge, the short-term savings are not as useful as the long term savings, especially since the final dollars will not be very different.
Personally, I only see bridges as making sense for fringe players, guys like Lazar. For a guy you project to be there with you six-seven years from now, you go long term, as the savings long term will help you more when your core is due for raises.

TSN saying Cody Franson may take a PTO with Chi.
Chi's D core is looking thin. They are currently over the cap, not counting Hossa's bullcrap LTIR, and they have the following dmen signed.
Keith
Seabrook
Connor Murphy
Michal Kempny
Michal Rozsival
Outside of Kane, Toews, Saad and maybe Anisimov their forward core doesn't look all that hot either. I think they are in for a big fall this year.

Christ old man Rozsival is still going? I swear every year he must have retired, but he's still being paid! That's crazy talk.

Pretty incredible that he's one of the few players that started back in the 90sa DJ has gone through many injuries over his career, yet is still going. To be fair he only played 22 games last season but he's coming on 40 years old and I'd assume he's got one more season in him, to hit the 1000 game plateau

I remember a poster that was bashing the Stone signing telling everyone Franson would have been a much better signing. Maybe the advance stats isn't the only thing you should look at after all.

I'm surprised he can't get a contract though. He is not a bad Dman. I was hoping the Leafs would sign him for cheap.
I don't know if he is greedy or his agent is, or what the deal is...but I remember he was always signing one-year deals. He has never had a deal over 2 years.

Franson is on the slow side and suffers from bubbles in the brain(as in farts)
And nobody would offer him a term deal because he's never healthy, more than ever GM's are very aware of a players history of injury's

Franson could be a dark horse for the 'Versteeg' of this year, previously known as the 'Stempniak'.

I'm sure it's his cousin who doesn't stop calling "to put in the good word" that causes some issues.

Treliving's probably just resting for a bit while he replenishes his mana, likely at some hidden well deep in the forest. Wizardry drains great deals of energy over short periods of time (so I hear).
