Pillar should be suspended by the Jays for at least 3 games, like they did with Escobar back in 2012. I think it should be longer since he said it to a specific player.

While I agree Pillar should be suspended, what he did in the heat of the moment should not be compared to what that idiot Escobar did. He wrote what Pillar said in his eye black. Very premeditated. He should have got about 50 games for that.

Tough to say about Bautista.
After he got back to home plate he was talking with McCann and it looked like they had it somewhat settled.

Meh, I don't think saying it versus writing it makes it any less bad. Pillar has to handle it better then Escobar did...
A: Anytime you're asked about it profusely apologize,
B: Making a donation to "You Can Play" wouldn't hurt,
C: If you're asked if you know any gay people don't list off stereotypical gay professions like Escobar did.
... the first is most important. People have an amazing capacity to forgive but you have to ask for forgiveness. It can't just be to Motte, has to be to everyone in that community.

I don't think that pitch was on purpose. But it still doesn't help with the Bautista drama.
edit: I think Pillar should be suspended by the team for a game, and the BJs need to issue a statement of apology to the player, the Braves and the league as well as the general public.

Hopefully the umpires are smart and pre-emptively warn both teams before the game. Because it looks like the Braves are planning to use first mover advantage to their favour.
-Throw at one of our players (Bautista is the obvious choice)
-Benches get warned so the Jays can't retaliate
-Braves get off scott-free because its the last time the two teams will meet for a couple years.

i'm sure the Jays would retaliate. this game doesn't mean much anymore.
Which is a shame cause normally Jurggens vs Stroman would be a good matchup.

Last year this kind of shenanigans actually helped the Jays bottom out last May. After Odur punched Bautista the Jays got swept by the Rays and then went on to have their best streak of baseball of the year that effectively moved them into first by the all star break.

Pillar's statement...
Quote:
"Last night, following my at-bat in the 7th inning, I used inappropriate language towards Braves pitcher Jason Motte. By doing so I had just helped extend the use of a word that has no place in baseball, in sports, or anywhere in society today. I’m completely and utterly embarrassed and feel horrible to have put the fans, my teammates and the Blue Jays organization in this position, I have apologized personally to Jason Motte, but also need to apologize to the Braves organization and their fans, and most importantly, to the LGBTQ community for the lack of respect I displayed last night. This is not who I am and will use this as an opportunity to better myself."
|
... that's about the right tone. If he keeps saying that (or words to similar effect) until people stop asking about it he'll be fine.

I think a formal apology is enough for an offhand statement, I'm sure he and and the Blue Jays consider the matter closed.

Pillar suspended 2 games, Freeman expected to miss 10 weeks. Bautista is likely getting nailed in the head tonight.

If he gets hit in the head, MLB should suspend the pitcher who hit him for life. Throw at his hip. Throwing a ball at someone's head is beyond stupid.

To be clear it was the Blue Jays that suspended Pillar for 2 games, not the MLB. Seems reasonable as he appears to be sincere in his apology, but sends a good message in that some language is not tolerated, even in the heat of the moment.
If someone does get hit by a pitch tonight, I look forward to the total ineptude that will be displayed the MLB umpires as I'm pretty sure things will get out of hand.

Same crew. They are not starting the game with warnings. It's being said a Braves veteran told a friend that there will be a fight tonight.
