Anyways I thought he brought up a good point about the kid. Said he was born into this NHL life and has spent his whole life being around NHLers and an NHL environment and if you are expecting him to be in awe of big "star" NHL players or to be intimidated by them, then you are in for a surprise.
Which sounds like exactly what Doughty was saying after Tkachuk cracked him, that he's surprised that a young rookie would be so bold as Tkachuk is. Kids been there and done that, so don't expect him to tippy toe around out there. Love it. Will hopefully rub off on other young players on the team now and in the future.

Yep that was CBS's Andy Strickland.

Tkachuk mean while has been a possession monster, brings physicality and has a mean streak so even if he's not scoring, he's contributing.
Sure, he could very well fall off the map further down the line but Gaudreau could have peaked last year and be a 60 point player from here on in. Can't account for what might happen. All I'm saying is that I think Tkachuk has a good shot of dethroning Gaudreau as the top forward on this team.
|
This is such a horrible argument. You know who leads the league? Probable Norris winner Brent Burns. Second? Probable Norris runner-up Erik Karlsson. You know who's right behind him? Defending Norris winner Drew Doughty. Some other names around the same area as Gaudreau include Brad Marchand, John Tavares, Dustin Byfulgien, Brent Seabrook, and Logan Couture.
Good players ALWAYS lead the league in turnovers because they have the puck on their stick a lot more. It's like how players on bad teams usually are at the top of the blocked shots category.
Also, while Gaudreau isn't winning any Selke's any time soon, to say he's a liability in his own zone is laughable.
Every player in the league brings nothing if they're "not on", that's why people say they're "not on".

Polak just loves hearing his own voice. Gaudreau is not a liability defensively and never has been throughout his college and NHL career.

During his slump Johnny was reportedly very dissapointed in his +/- stat and had taken pride in that part of his game early on; at one point he was in the low -20's.
He's a -4 currently with a good shot at being an + player for a third straight season.
He's really bought in and you can tell to the system and GG's coaching style and honestly has looked like the Johnny of the last two years since the Ottawa OT goal.

Johnny has his limitations in the defensive zone due to his limited wingspan and spends a little bit too much time floating when he shouldn't be imo, but he's not actively detrimental to the team like Brouwer and Versteeg are with their complete inability to move the puck when they get it. That's what a liability is.

Yeah, his skating isn't great - not as bad as we were warned about prior to the season though, but it isn't a strength.
He does, however, put many other forwards to absolute shame on this team with how good he is on the forecheck and how many puck races he wins. How many times does he routinely beat a defender to the puck, or makes it a 50/50 proposition, or just catches a defender who is first on the puck and then battles him for it? You see this multiple times a game with "slow foot Tkachuk". It is impressive. It is damn impressive!
He simply has the Dennis Rodman factor at play. He just wants the puck more than anyone else on the ice from either team.
|
Dennis Rodman.... that is actually a great comparison. Very high compete level, so many intangibles.

Look, I'm with you on Brouwer. But come on, Versteeg is definitely not a liability, especially for what he's being paid. $950,000, and he's putting up points at a near-0.5 p/gp pace. Versteeg is a shootout specialist, a better, cheaper, veteran Colborne.

Uh no. Versteeg was good earlier in the year. Right now he's no good, coasting out there, gliding to lose pucks.
If the season ended right now, he'd definitely would not an extension from me.

And yet still producing. Versteeg has 4 points in his last 6 games, and 6 in his last 10. He's been pretty consistently this productive all season. And that isn't counting his four shootout winners this season... nobody else has done that for the Flames, and only one other player has scored a single goal.

|
To be fair, the reason sophomore slumps happen is usually because players are given more defensive responsibility after their rookie year, and it's literally not possible to give Tkachuk more responsibility.

It is possible to significantly reduce his teammate quality by taking him away from Backlund and Frolik, however.

My favorite quote from Strickland in the conversation was "Tkachuk has "been in the NHL" longer than Doughty".

But what if they took him away from the Mikes and put him with SEAN MONAJOHNNY?
Maybe his fancy stats won't be so fancy, but I bet he puts up 80-90 points!

Tkachuk seems like a smart versatile player, I bet if you put him on his off wing he'd play the position well.

Seems early in his career to do that, but he seems to have shattered the learning curve with everything else, so why not? Good point
