Sorry if I missed it, do they only get paid for times when they play? How often do they play for team USA? Like the Canadian women, most of these players have other jobs and/or play for club teams right?
This doesn't sound like it is comparable to the US women's soccer complaints where it is my understanding that they are paid a pittance compared to the US Men's team, yet are far more profitable.
I'd have to imagine the US women's hockey team isn't exactly raking in the dough.

From the ESPN article
Quote:
Even though it is USA Hockey's legal obligation as the governing body to develop opportunities for both boys and girls, according to the U.S women it spends more than $3.5 million per year to support boys participating in its national team development program. That $3.5 million goes to support a schedule of more than 60 games a season for teenage boys, with no comparable development opportunities for girls.
Yet, USA Hockey's website claims: USA Hockey's primary emphasis is on the support and development of grassroots hockey programs.
|
This is definitely not right, but paying the girls is not exactly the same thing.

Go back and read post #4 by habernac. There's the math. They are viewing it as a full time job and only getting compensated for a very casual job.

Sounds like they only get paid during the 6 months leading up to the Olympics. Otherwise they get nothing.

So is it a full time job? Or is she just saying that?
If it is, then basically asking them to be permanent full time volunteers is insane. And by full time job, I mean the US women's team is together year round, constantly playing exhibition games and requiring a full time commitment from the players, thus eliminating any other ways for them to earn a living. But I feel like she means full time job in terms of training and staying fit, not in terms of the team being in action year round.
I sympathize that women's hockey may not be a great way to earn a living but it doesn't make much sense for USA hockey to pay them full time salaries if they only play, for example, 1 month out of the year.

Maybe the better question is how does this compare to the differences in funding between other Men's and Women's programs.

then my opinion is the women should get nothing, if their whole argument that by law women's hockey should be supported equally to the mens.
juts give them the same access to ice, and training facilities, and same financial support to go to major tourneys.
If that's not currently happening, it should be.

So there certainly should be something similar to the U17 NDT for girls/women, where the budget is apparently 3.5M
And they should be compensated like any other national athlete, regardless of gender. That is a given.
Beyond that, I'm not so sure they should be legally entitled to anything more

If the NHL is funding the Development program then it makes sense that they don't have a similar program for girls.

that seems reasonable, and seems to make sense.
this reminds me of the soccer lawsuit when the women were complaining about having to play on different turf than then men for the world cup.
I don't think they're going to win this one, either.

Cassie Campbell @CassieCampbell
I support what USA Hockey women's team are doing. They are fighting for basic principals and not huge wages...
Cassie Campbell @CassieCampbell
...we went through similar situation with Hockey Canada after 1998. The working relationship btwn players now and HC is dealt with through..
Cassie Campbell @CassieCampbell
...a Women's High Performance Advisory Committee that was started back then by Therese Brisson and a small group of people.

If they don't like it, don't play anymore. It's as simple as that. No one if forcing these women to play for the US National team. Most of them have a free University Education they received as a result of playing hockey, use those, get a career, and move on.
This whole women's sports should be treated the same as men's sports from a compensation/funding perspective is completely BS at that high of a level of sport. At the grass roots level, I completely agree. At that level, it should be you eat what you kill.

Except, once again, American law. They are citing the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, which according to the news articles includes a mandate for "equitable" support and funding for women's sport compared to men's. And while everyone is naturally getting hung up on wage demands, the team's letter spells out many other grievances, including failure to support development programs for girls.

What if it's the NHL that funds that?
