Frack UPS - Join the fight.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WeirdNew...115440-cp.html
I have already signed my name up, dont care if I see any money out of it but it might save me the following question that I must ask all US Ebay sellers before ordering.
*****************
Hello, I was wondering about order XXXXXX - you indicate shipping is via UPS. Is it possible you can ship via USPS - UPS charges outrageous brockerage charges to Canada for items which can cause your item of X dollars to be likely X+50-85 dollars (X being less than $250US). In Canada the phrase goes not "Ask yourself what Brown can do for you" but its "Before purchasing items from the US ask yourself, how much is Brown going to shaft you if you are forced to use them as your primary shipper to Canada".
Thanks

I got burned a few years ago by UPS on some motorcycle parts I ordered from California. I'll never deal with them again, all my business goes through Canada Post and the USPS.
Nothing gets me furious like UPS and Ticketmaster ripoff fees.

I think they should pass a law that states the advertised price must be exactly the price you pay including all taxes, fees, etc, etc...
I hateit when I order tickets from ticketmaster and its an extra $10/ticket after they include all their damn fees. Or when an airline advertises a seat sale for say $99 and it actually costs $200 by the time you add in all the taxes and fees. Or cell phones are advertised as $30/month, but you get a bill for $45. I even find it annyoing when something is advertised as 99 cents, and all of a sudden I have to pay $1.14 just because of simple GST + PST.
Its annoying and very misleading and should be illegal, imo. For UPS or any other company that tries to nail you with extra fees.

you dont have to pay UPS to clear your item, you could do that yourself. simply fill out the B3 and present it to customs, then when the wait for the release and drive back to UPS to present the customs cleared customs authority.
or you could pay UPS to do this for you. why shouldnt a company be allowed to charge for a value added service?
the alternative is to do what you did. vote with your wallet. however, as long as a for profit enterprise is able to charge for a service, they should and will. if you read the small print on the terms and conditions, you will see only their air service includes brokerage and only in the cases of low value shipments.

I usually go with USPS when ordering from the States for non-fragile, in-expensive items. The problem with USPS is that items insured will no longer be insured once it crosses the Canadian border and falls into the hands of Canada Post, because of the switch of handler. So essentially, anything that happens to your package on Canadian soil, you're SOL.
Because UPS/Fedex will handle the delivery end to end, insurance stays in effect all the way to your door. You can avoid brokerage fees with UPS/Fedex if you upgrade to Expedited shipping. Expedited shipping includes all fees except for duty and taxes. It can be expensive though.

I don't get a lot of stuff from the US, but the last set of golf clubs I got earlier this year were via UPS Air (Expedidted- it was the only option the seller/dealer gave to Canada). Yes, brokerage fee inlcuded on air..total shipping for a set of golf irons was $75 CDN all in.
Got them less the 48 hours after ordering from Ohio. Quick, reliable, no issues with the delivery process. For an item that's $500 US, coming from the US, I don't mind paying $30 more for that for that level of no hassle, speedy door to door service.

i just sent my mom a gift last week, used USPS...and anyway, all I know is my mom had to pay a fee when she GOT the items, even though I had already paid for shipping. The item came from an ONLINE store....anyone know anything about this or why it wouldve happened? I paid for it and the taxes and everything else. And the total value of the item was only $39 (plus taxes which i paid for).

If she paid anything, it would have been a small amount. Usually get charged GST and something else... can't remember what the second thing is. Customs fee?

Processing fee. AKA as the donut eating charge for figuring out how much GST your $25 item should be worth, and then adding another $5-8 on top of your cost.

The problem with sending things USPS, especially around busy times, is that it can take forever to clear customs. I've sent packages to my parents that have taken 10 weeks to get to Canada!

How is an airline company advertising a seat sale for $99 and then charging $200 for it after they add in fuel surcharge, airport fees, taxes, etc, adding any value? Its not. Its just a scam to make the price look lower than it actually is. Maybe UPS is adding value, I don't know, I don't use them, but there are a lot of companies that advertise prices way lower than they actually are in reality. And that should not be allowed in my opinion. I should not have to go out of my way and call them to find out what the actual price is. The price written in their ad should be exactly what I have to pay.

That's not the point. The point is that neither you, the receiver, nor
the sender were informed of this "service". Until the package gets to
you, only then are you told the amount of the extra charges.
Nowhere do they inform you of the "brokerage" fees. Go to UPS.com
and do up a quote, and you'll see.
Then, if you don't want to pay the fee, they send it back, or "lose" it,
which has happened to me once ($140 item, they wanted $40 for the fee!
Talked to the shipper and he told me to take the "send it back" option.
He never received it back.) They hold your item hostage for something
you (and the shipper) had never been informed about.

No one is disputing that but where is a online calculator to see how much the brockerage is going to be, they dont have it - the fee seems to be similiar to the ebay sellers, high for low cost high volume and as the cost goes up their fee decreases as a percentage of value.
At least with Ticketmaster you know their charges before hand or at least can find out, not so with UPS.
FedEx doesnt do it, USPS doesnt do it (Canada Post has its clearing charges clearly marked on its website).
That is the issue, getting an item, thinking that you paid for express shipping, then getting dinged 20-75$ when you get it, when they dieliver it they have you in a vulnerable position, you dont know the charge of that size is coming, so you are almost bullied (wrong word but you get what I mean) into paying it.
If you dont, then you have to go through the rigamaroll of going through a credit card hold etc. You cant even call them before hand to ask what the charge will be until you get the Delivery Notice, you can at least do that with FedEx.
I also vote with my wallet and never under any circumstance use UPS, I have in the last 2 months used FedEx 6 times and USPS 14 times. 5 of the 6 times FedEx was the more expensive route but I knew what I was paying.

also, did a rate quote USA to Canada and it clearly states this:
Please Note: Shipping rates quoted are estimates based on the information you have supplied. Shipping rates do not include duties, taxes or other non-routine customs brokerage charges. Other shipping charges, surcharges or accessorial charges may apply and your final shipping charge may differ based on your shipper characteristics and the characteristics of, and services requested for, packages actually tendered to UPS

Funny this should come up today. I purchased fog lamps for my car from the USA and the guy shipped them with UPS. I went over there to pick them up today and had to pay $50 to get a $140 item (including shipping).
