2016 Calgary Stampeders Offseason
Stampeders kickoff the offseason by keeping Maver and Paredes in the fold.
Quote:
The Calgary Stampeders have signed national punter Rob Maver and national place-kicker Rene Paredes through the 2018 season. Both kickers were eligible to become free agents in February.
Maver has been with the Stamps since 2010 while Paredes joined the Red and White in 2011. Between them, the kickers have earned six West Division all-star berths and five CFL all-star selections.
“Rob and Rene have been one of the best kicking tandems in the CFL for a number of years and have given us great production and stability at those positions,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “They’ve both been important contributors to the Stamps’ success and I’m pleased they have chosen to remain in Calgary and be part of a team that I’m confident will once again be a championship contender in 2017.”

Both Rob and Rene had a very good 2016 season in my opinion, more of the same in 2017 please and thanks.

Glad to see them both back. I'm assuming the Stamps gave them a fair offer; in turn, they would have been silly to have chased bigger money elsewhere.

Hard to believe both of those guys have been with the Stamps that long already. Man time flies. Still seems like yesterday when we had Burke Dales and Sandro DeAngelis as the kicking duo.
These two are 30/31 years old already and were just young pups when they took over kicking duties with the Stamps.

The Calgary Stampeders have signed national fullback Charlie Power to a new contract. The Okotoks product was eligible to become free agent in February.
Power was drafted in the fourth round, 28th overall, by Calgary in 2013 and he joined the Stamps in 2014 after completing his career at the University of Saskatchewan. He has appeared in 33 regular-season games over three seasons with the Red and White.
“Charlie has done a great job improving his skills as a core special-teams player,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “I look forward to his continued growth on offence.”

Charleston Hughes will be back with the Stamps (signs a two year contract extension) - Great news.
"I'm glad to get the contract taken care of," said Hughes. "I'm very happy to be back with the Stamps and I look forward to us having another great season.
" We have a lot of unfinished business and we just have to focus on getting even better as a team."

Micah Johnson is still a free agent so need him signed (unless he has and I missed it), but I agree once they get him signed. I trust they will but I do recall reading somewhere that one of the CFL writers thought maybe Johnson woudl get some NFL interest.

Was not aware that MJ was a UFA. That has to be another priority signing for Huf if the guy is staying north of the border.
Beltre and Quinn Smith as well...likely gonna lose at least one of them however.

Good news about Jorden, he certainly played well in the 2nd half of last season. I'm starting to wonder about bringing back Marquay McDaniel and how much money he's looking for, don't get me wrong, I really like McDaniel, but the money he's likely asking for could likely be better spent on making sure the O-line can protect Bo Levi Mitchell.

The Calgary Stampeders have signed national defensive lineman Quinn Smith. The three-year veteran from Concordia University had been eligible to become a free agent in February.
Smith played 10 games in 2016 including four starts at defensive tackle. He recorded 10 tackles, three sacks and two knockdowns. He also served as the emergency backup at offensive line and was dressed as the sixth offensive lineman for the Grey Cup game.

Huff doesn't waste any time re-signing the players he wants back.

Hopefully they don't re-sign Chokey McChokerson this off-season.
Let him sign elsewhere.

I believe it's the organization's penchant to choke. Unfortunately that's in the air or water at McMahon as the choking culture dates back to the 90's and is still alive and well.

I really hope we retain McDaniel. I think it would be in his best interest as well. He's got perfect chemistry with Mitchell. Given his age, I bet he will quickly find his way out of the league when out of the Stamps system much like Raymond.

It's not exactly unique to the Stampeders. The BC Lions of the mid 2000s should've Warren Moon'd the league for a few years. They have three Grey Cups in the last 17 years.
The Als also have three in the same span - 2002, 2009, 2010. They're .500 in the big game.
The *barf* Riders have two since the millennium. And we all know why that is.
Esks: Three championships post-2000.
Argos: Two.
Bombers and Ticats haven't won this century, and the Redblacks obviously have 1.
The CFL is too small for this not to happen. If you're a good organization, you should cash in a championship every five years or so. If you suck, you don't. It's not like the Stamps had a bunch of physical freaks running roughshod over the league this year. When there are only nine teams, there aren't any secrets by the time you get to game #20. And while it's incredibly impressive that the Stamps are able to maintain the level of discipline and focus they do in the regular season, anyone can hold it together for a game at the end of the year.
It's a quirky league. Now stop letting them challenge penalties.
