Klimchuk with a perfect breakaway goal, the initial shot was saved but he squeezed the bounce through on a second attempt
3-0 no assist

Matt Bailey scores . Tokarski's just having a meltdown. Poirier should get an assist.
4-0
Rittich just made a bunch of great saves.
**** he might be hurt. Nah he's fine. And Kylington might be hurt.
Final Score 4-0
37-save shutout for Rittich. He wasn't left out to dry or anything, but he did make some nice saves to earn the shutout.
39 shots for Stockton
San Diego's 8 game winning streak is broken by our kids and Huska's Matt Bailey. The Heat are now 1st in the Pacific Division.

Rittich with 3 shut outs in 7 games
1.43 GAA
.949 save %
Wow
It's criminal that he's only 4-3 with those numbers.

Double impressive considering everyone's favorite Gillies is sitting at .902 / 2.88GAA behind the exact same team.

Gillies is a favorite because he is a Flames draft pick. It's quite obvious that Rittich is the better goalie. And at 24 years old he still has a lot of potential.
That being said, I'd still like to see Gillies get the majority of the starts. Gillies, IMO, has a higher ceiling and could, one day, be a starter for the Flames.
That being said, if the Flames keep Rittich in the system he definitely sees NHL action before Gillies. Rittich could very end up being the better goalie. He certainly is right now and only time will tell who becomes better. One thing we can say about Calgary right now is that they don't have a shortage of goaltender depth. Hopefully one of these young guys can turn into the next starter for Calgary.

Was there any word about Kylington's injury? I didn't catch the post-game.

How is it obvious? Better numbers =/= better goalie. There is a reason why Gillies wins more and loses less games than Rittich. The team plays better offensively in front of Gillies because they are more comfortable opening up with him in net. The starts with Rittich are usually the more boring games the Heat play because they fall back into a defensive shell. His numbers are great, but you are outright wrong about him being the better goalie.

That's a pretty bad and unprovable argument. Even the PBP guy said last night that Rittich is the better of the two right now. Gillies has more wins because he's had more winnable starts. Rittich is clearly stopping more pucks than Gillies right now.
It's a results based game. And the better goalie should have better results. So far this season Rittich is in the lead.
I can't believe you have the balls to call someone "outright wrong" when they are clearly right in the present moment. Rittich just had a 37 save shutout against a team in 2nd on an 8 game win streak. He's lights out right now.
Gillies has been great - but don't take away from Rittichs earned success. 3 shutouts in 7 starts doesn't happen on accident.
Long term I hope they both pan out and who knows what it'll look like in even a couple months. But today , this season, Rittich has been better.

Don't quote me on this at risk of Rittich letting in six next game on a jynx, but I would say Rittich has better numbers because his rebound control is close to NHL-level while Gillies' rebound control is AHL-level right now. Both guys can make the first save, but Rittich doesn't need to make the second save as often.

It's just amazing how useless the pre-season can be with respect to goalies...
Elliott looked unbeatable in PS, and looked so calm and steady. Then he let in his first 2 shots of the RS, and has struggled ever since, looking very 'floppy'.
Johnson looked okay in the PS, and struggled at times. Then in the RS, HE has been the calm-looking one, and has been lights out.
Rittich couldn't stop a beachball in the rookie camp, and didn't earn much PS time. Now the guy is unbeatable.
Bizarre.

Best case scenario is he sustains this level of play through 20+ starts throughout the year. Lots of goalies have hot months. He's still definitely in the wait and see category. I mean. So is Gillies and we've been watching him a lot longer.
Elliott is safe for now. He stands a good chance of turning his game around too.

Heat make some moves.
Shinkaruk is back.
Aagarrd and Kanzig assigned to Adirondack.
Kanzig assignment is interesting because it suggests Culkin is good to go.

With Shinkaruk and Culkin back in the line-up, the Heat should be a much better team.

They've already been firing on all cylanders and have been the best team in their Divison and at times the league this year. Getting these guys back is going to turn this team into a juggernaut. It's early yet but this team has got talent through out its lineup with a good mix of veterans - it could go deep for a Calder Cup run which would be super fun.
Regardless this team truly is proof of just how far our scouting and drafting has come in the last 2 decades, very exciting to follow.

For sure. Just took a peek at the standings since I haven't checked in a few weeks and I see that they are first in their division.
Last year I really had a hard time following them because I felt they should have been better and I really didn't care for Huska. But seeing management part ways with so many bodies like Arnold, Agostino, and Shore (which at first, seemed like a bad idea to me) and replace them with veterans like Vey, Frattin, and Pribyl has really improved the team and even improved prospects such as Poirer, Klimchuck and Mangiapane. Most years I don't care for AHL vets taking quality ice time from promising prospects, but when I see guys like Jankowski, Mangiapane, Klimchuck and Poirer as productive leaders over Frattin and Lomberg, it tells me something is finally working.
The Flames organization needs this club to go deep this year. I can't remember the last time their farm deep has come close to a Calder Cup, and given that the Flames are always up against the cap, always spending more than they should on free agents, and are in need of players to put them in legit contention, they need these young players to take the next step and there's no bigger step than proving there's nothing else for them in the AHL. They do that by winning the division, conference, or Calder.
