$25-a-day daycare pilot project coming to 18 Alberta early learning child care centre
WTF. Stilll up to or over 3X the cost in Quebec.
Quote:
The Alberta government is launching a $10-million pilot project that will allow 18 Alberta early learning child care (ELCC) centres to offer daycare at a maximum of $25 a day.
The province said the project will create an estimated 1,000 new child care spaces and up to 230 new child care jobs. It may also help some families save hundreds of dollars a month.

The owner or the daycare by my house drives a $120k AMG Benz, probably a bit of fat can be taken off the cost.

I'll take higher child care costs over ~10% higher marginal tax rate and a 10% higher sales tax.

I pay $1700 per month for 2 boys at only 4 days per week.
It's painful.

Don't worry, those kids will eventually help subsidise our lonely childless twilight years until death comes as a sweet release.

It is great that the government is actually moving on an incentive like this but this is a baby step at best. The amount of spots available in Calgary will be negligible and getting one of these $25/day spots will be essentially impossible.

The only quarrel I have with it is that in Calgary we're experiencing record unemployment, people are canceling their child care, be it nannies, dayhomes or daycare because most families are are down one employed spouse.

Yet child care availability and pricing is still disastrous.

Gentlemen, the NDP would like to call this operation distraction. But the inner memo calls it operation vote buying.

Alberta shows an average day care cost of $789.00 a month. The NDP are proposing what about $550.00 a month. so I'm assuming that they're not going to force cost control, they're going to subsidize to the tune of about 240.00 per month per space.
I don't know how many daycare spaces there are in Alberta, but if I assume 100,000 based on 789,000 kids in this province between the ages of 0 and 14.
So we're going to subsidize 240 per month x 100,000 = 24,000,000 per month x 12 = $288,000,000

I'm willing to bet anyone who makes a good living will be exempt from participation like every single other tax credit as of late and get to pick up the tab for others....... Continuing on with the constantly evolving world of wealth redistribution.

amusing numbers. I pay over $1500 a month for my 2.5 year old daughter to go to daycare 5 days a week.
that average must include kids that are only in for 1-2 days a week.
As an aside, I'm sure the fact that I have a good job will exempt me from any savings. and there will be a "daycare premium" added onto my fees. Thanks Notley.
