Market Mall, Northland Village, Marleborough Mall, Sunridge Mall.
I think the reason why the south's malls have bigger traffic is that there is only two of them. The rest are power centres.
The only power centre I can think of in the north is Crowfoot Crossing.

On the topic of Edmonton, I talk about Edmonton. On a topic about Calgary, I talk about Calgary. Confusing?
Jeez, I even said in the last thread, Edmonton is not as bad as people think.
Edmonton's not a bad city. West Ed, there is stuff to do. But you make it out to be something its not, like the Dali Lama calls West Ed home. Even when proven wrong (ie. Ikea) you keep fighting and you get called for that. Is Edmonton big? Yeah. Is there stuff to do? Yeah. Is it upscale? Not by a long shot.
You keep trying to turn this into a Calgary vs. Edmonton fight, and then cry wolf... then magiacally somehow think I'm waving Calgary pom pom's... I said in the last thread, in 2 years, I don't plan to even live in Alberta. Edmonton is a ceasepool, and I have no interest in living in Calgary either.

"the mall attracts anywhere between 10 million and 20 million people each year placing the mall at par with the two Disney parks of the United States, with about half of that number being tourists from outside of the Edmonton area. I think it is a pretty good mall if it accounts for 1% of Canada's retail sales...numbers a little old but they are probably the same if not more and same numbers as Disney Land.
But go ahead an harp on Edmonton just because the Oilers are there.
|
How can that guy give a range of 10 million people and say its on par with Disney land/world? They know exactly how many enter their park.

As much as I enjoy a good Calgary vs Edmonton battle... to call WEM prestigious is laughable. Having moved to Edmonton 10 months ago, the only times I go to the WEM is when family visits and I'm dragged along with.
It's turning into a dump. Sure I buy clothing there, but next time you are there take a look at it instead of the teen girls with skimpy clothing. Some fountains are not running and they haven't bothered to clean the deposits from the water, there are cracks, it feels old, parking is a bitch, and it feels like a building that has been peiced together. It needs to be updated. At least the water park has.
However, moving away from a one-building mall to an open box store style like South Commons isn't my preferred choice. If you plan on visiting more than one store, then driving/parking is a pain, and since everything is spread out more, you have to take the car when you go to another store. Not to mention in the winter time where you have to walk outdoors more.

There was an Ikea, no question. It's where Red's/Ed's is now.
The second Bay is NOT the Silver City movie theatre. Silver City is a new wing of the mall - Phase 4.
The old second Bay is where the Zellers is now. The old Canadian Tire is where Chinatown is now.

Found some numbers for Disney... apparently that guy has his stats wrong.
From Amusement Business Magizine: - Magic Kingdom, 16.2 million visitors, making it the most visited theme park in the world.
- Epcot, 9.9 million visitors
- Disney-MGM Studios, 8.6 million visitors
- Disney's Animal Kingdom, 8.2 million visitors
Comparing WEM to Disney is ridiculous.

Outside of the US, the Olympics eclipses all. But in the US, it seems to be equal parts "Flames", "Stampede", "Olympics", "Banff/Mountains", "That's near where all the oil is". I find I can say that I'm from Calgary to 95% of Americans without having to say it is in Canada. Although, more than half have no idea where it is in Canada, and most think it is pretty close to Toronto. My experience is mostly with Southerners though. Northerners seem to have a better idea of where it is.

Does store location, 2556, Phase 3, since replaced by Reds, provide enough historical evidence, or are you going to go on an archeological dig?
And for the record, I have never been at Northlands to an Oilers playoff game...have they ever won everything? I'd remain skeptical.

The more people from Edm I come accross the more I'm amazed with how myopic they are about their city. I suppose the reason they don't get out much is becuase their airport is in Red Deer, and they have to travel through Cgy to get to their destination.

I just went to WEM this week and had a great time. We stayed at the Fantasyland Hotel in a Polynesian themed room - while cheesy, it was fun and had a cool jacuzzi area (not bad for $179/night). Also, Bourbon Street was very busy and there are virtually no vacancies anywhere in the mall (there currently is no GAP store as the WEM location is the first one in western Canada to receive the "new" makeover the company is implementing).
But the 2 best reasons to go to the mall are Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister Co. We don't have these 2 stores in Calgary, and they are 2 of the best stores you can buy clothes at (both male and female included). Whenever I went on business to the US, I would have fit in a trip to Abercrombie.
WEM also has a Lacoste store - which is a big deal for some people.
Also, there were a few comments in this thread about the FCUK store in WEM... to those unaware, Chinook has had a FCUK store for quite awhile now.

And besides, it's a mall. Why anyone would defend a shopping mall like it's a member of the family is beyond me. Do you really want to attach the identity of the entire city to an overgrown shopping centre? Wow -- they have a Tommy Hilfiger store? Well golly gee, look at that.
|
It's such a dump eh.
Generated 23,500 jobs;
Contributed $339 million in taxes a year;
An annual economic impact of $1.2 billion;
Surpassed the economic benefit of the Town of Banff by generating tourism expenditures of $670 million a year, compared to $565 million a year in Banff;
Established Edmonton and Alberta as a major tourist destination by attracting millions of national and international tourists annually.
http://www.triplefive.com/tourism.html
I don't see anyone defending it like it is a member of the family....there happens to be some people on this site that will bash Edmonton no matter what is there or who good something is. It's not a dump...if it was...it would be out of business and they wouldn't be expanding and they wouldn't have the numbers like above.

Just for clarity, Reds is now called Ed's (I believe Ed's Entertainment Complex is the full name).

It's actually called Ed's now since the mall took over ownership. I don't remember the car dealership but I wouldn't doubt it.
