Had an idea!

It is pretty easy to figure out which supplements are junk these days and which ones work.

Nobody has an excuse to not know. The fact that people still think a detox works is mind-boggling.

I would just ask my family physician, personally.

The thing that bugs me to is that they didn't vaccinate when their child was born or soon after either. Double negligent in my mind.
Then there's the families source of income being the flaky homeopathic bs products.
From what I can tell, it seems that this couple would do the same treatment again with a different child. I do think a trial is necessary.

Some people just don't care, look the pseudoscience we've seen in the losing weight/workout threads.

The rest of the kids should be put in foster care if they haven't already.

See, and here is the rub for me. The foster system is infinitely bad for children, especially since it looks like the Stephans were loving, albeit stupid, parents. I would hope for a combination of a prison sentence for one, and strong supervision for the other. No reason to do additional damage to this family through punitive punishments.

On a slightly different note, this self-medicating BS aggravates me to no end. I have a lot of time for honest, decent skepticism of the pharmaceutical industry. A lot of the time the drugs that we told work quite effectively don't work very well at all or they come with a lot of stipulations that users are simply unwilling to abide by. The Accutane/pregnancy imbroglio is one such example.
However, what we have now is infinitely better than all of the essential oils, natural supplements, and pseudo-spiritual crap sold by the tawdry, myriad caravan of peddlers that truly make money off of the ignorance and misery of ordinary people.
I was just diagnosed with a disorder that I have had my entire life, and, until recently, was completely unaware of. It blew me away how many family members came out of the woodwork recommending this or that course of treatment that was downright insane. It blew me away even further how angry they got when I insisted I would be following the standard biomedical course of therapy/treatment.

I have trouble trusting dentists too. I know of one that would insist on additional work when it wasn't necessary and thought everyone should get braces. If you're ever skeptical about a recommended work, always get a 2nd opinion.

Not a fair comment. The chiropractor I go to has done wonders for my bad shoulder and my back hasn't wobbled on me since I've continued seeing him after that fix. And, yes, strengthening my core will help my back. That's exactly what he said.
All professions have good and bad members.

Except the core tenets of chiropractic state that you have "viruses" in your spinal column that cause most diseases and mental maladies.
A sports therapist would do the same and more without all the pseudo-science and spiritual quackery.

Everyone I know who goes to a chiropractor is constantly needing 'adjustments'. Makes me wonder exactly what they're doing and what kind of long term issues these people may run into.

I had a co-worker who would always go. "Ya, need to go to my chiropractor again, get fixed up". He'd go like every 2 weeks. If he is fixing you, why do you need to go back? that's not my idea of fixed.

I won't defend the system but I'm a foster dad, I took my 25 year old university graduate ex crack dealing gang member for coffee last night, he calls me dad, as do most of my foster kids at some point in time.
There are good foster parents and social workers out there, our kids do ok. I've got guys in the navy, building houses working in warehouses, they are all pretty well from the down town east side and would be dead, in jail or strung out in an alley if they hadn't been scooped and ended up with someone like me.

Seems to me we have a bit of a terminology problem that's causing people who aren't paying close attention a lot of confusion. So let's figure out a lexicon.
Naturopathy shall now be called: Snake oil.
Homeopaths shall now be called: Snake oil salesmen.
Alternative medicine shall now be called: Nonsense.
Conventional medicine shall now be called: Medicine.

I'm not a chiropractor drum banger, just don't think generalizing the profession or the professionals within as "bad" is a fair statement.
Anyway, your assertion regarding viruses in your spinal column as a core tenet certainly sounded like spiritual quackery to me as well so I checked. You're right. That used to be a belief. But is widely rejected by most Chiropractors now.
The last time I went to a sports therapist, I received a bunch of Dr. Ho treatments. I suspect maybe I chose a bad one, but I don't believe the whole profession is bad.
I digress....It's a tragedy a child who was too young to form his own belief system had to pass because of his parents' terribly flawed belief system.
