"For 10 years, we had a government that acted rather as a cheerleader for such projects instead of acting as a responsible referee and establish a clear, open, rigorous and transparent approval process — and that's what we intend to do," Trudeau said in French during a news conference in Montreal.
No Justin, we don't need the Prime Minister to play referee, we need leadership.
Be a leader. Take a stand. If I disagree with the stance, so be it, but failing to take any stance and playing referee instead is not the leadership we need right now.
Royalty reviews should happen and should happen often.
Why, what's the point? We've now established that the current system works for anything from $25 oil to $100+ oil. Why do you think we need to waste any more time confirming the obvious?
Haha! Shes getting called out for previously slamming the previous Government's 'unfair Royalty Regime' and now trotting out the exact same plan as though its her idea of awesomeness.
Totally. Clueless.
What outcome of this review would have resulted in you not complaining about the NDP being clueless? And how often should Royalites be reviewed by the Province of Alberta.
And lets all take a minute to remember Stelmech going for the cash crab, capital fleeing the province, and then the rules changing back.
The NDP performed a review that was reasonably timely, hired the correct people to do the review, and provided results that will benefit the province going forward.
People should be celebrating this as government working, rational not ideology prevailing. This is what we want government to look like.

There's a lot more to royalties than just price of oil. what if the cost of pulling oil out of the ground suddenly changes for AB? what if the technology makes it much, much cheaper?
How about if the government decides to slash taxes for business? or greatly increase them?
I don't think you're considering the full picture.
I'm pretty sure Rob Anders' entire tenure gives it a run for it's money.
Right. Some backbencher snoozing in a backwater riding is more ridiculous than this incompetent group of bumblers whose decisions have directly ruined the prospects of 1000s of families.

And you expected more?

That's how you occupy the mushy middle and capture all the swing voters.

It was stupid then and Stelmach was blasted for it, Stelmach's bumbling is what originally drove me away from the PC's. It's important to learn lessons from history rather than jumping off the same bridge.
Hahahaha. After all that blustering about Albertans not getting their fair share they keep it the same. Just more evidence that we have a bunch of principled clueless idiots at the helm. Mad props to the review panel for sticking to their guns.

Then they will make more profits and pay more royalties as a result.
People like Topp and Notely knew *nothing* about the industry economics before this. I'll give them credit for listening and hearing.
I'll also give them credit for resisting the urge to take all the upside potential which would have been as fatal as trying to get blood from the stone at current prices.
Still more hints at value added projects, which sounds to me like boondoggle refineries.
And the theory of rewarding lower cost producers sounds good but the devil will be in the details.
Solid grades. They brought in smart people. Clearly listened. Whether it was our good fortune that politics met a crap market or they were genuinely pragmatic about this all along the result is the same.
Now that the uncertainty is removed I think a lot of deep pockets will go shopping.

Couldn't they have done this review without inciting Albertans first with they're whole fair share rhetoric? That and then the posturing. So frustrating. To any of those who thought Albertans weren't getting they're fair share, does this sway that opinion? Just curious.

You have no real perspective.
*beep boop* what are jokes. Does not compute. Error. Error.
