Trade deadline is the better time to get a "pick and a prospect" from teams that need NHL players to make the POs.
Heading into this deep draft, teams are getting excited about the players they may pick.
And sure, you can make a "big cap hit" deal. Maybe the Leafs can get another long term injury guy for Kessell, like they did with Clarkson. Maybe Pronger.

But if you get Rick Nash, you're getting him in the second hslf of the contract.

People question the value of the later years of contracts all the time. Mark Giordano is a hero in this city, and in discussions about his contract extension a lot of fans question the wisdom of a $7 mil cap hit when he's in his late 30s.

We see a lot of trades at the draft. There's a lot of talk of this year being particularly big.
The trade xeadline is for upcoming UFA's mostly.

I never mentioned Rick Nash. No idea what he has to do with Kessel's contract or future.

You were asking why Perron got a first. It was partly because the Pens were depleted and were in a dogfight to make the POs.
No one is in a dogfight to make the POs now, and they are getting excited about the first round.

Kessel's list of teams don't make much sense, assuming he wants out of TO. But if the Leafs kept $2-3M of Kessel's cap hit I can definitely see him getting a 1st and a prospect. The Leafs will have to either take some of the cap hit or take some really bad contracts to make a deal happen, though. Like Lecavalier + MacDonald or something like that.

Bigger trades are made in the summer. And yes, picks are traded all the time.

Lecalvier+ Macdonald mean Philly will get him for free financially.
Wow you guys will be astounded when he's moved if you expect the Leafs to take back over 9 million per in cap hit for years

Interesting list. I think only Philly would be dumb enough to make a trade for Phil. Phil in Philly could be a thing

I can't wait until he is traded as I think you are going to be so disappointed

Read an article about hypothetical trades based off "rumors" for the Bleacher report (first problem) and they suggested Bennett, Hiller, 15th pick for Kessel. Must have been written by a Leafs fan

I wouldn't do the 15th pick and Hiller, nevermind one of the Flames cornerstones of the future as well. If that's what some fans expect in return they should be ready to be disappointed.

That was right after Dougie Hamilton for Boone Jenner.

Yeah just a brutal article in general. I couldn't believe that Flames deal though the best part is if Leaf fans think they are getting that they will be so disappointed
