Get a second or third opinion. Always.
Lots of GMs out there are happy to help.

Seek second opinions. There's no shame in asking a fellow GM for advice and getting some guidance feom experienced GMs is extremely helpful, especially when it comes to the value of draft picks and futures.

Be cautious about adding cap into any deal particularly for NEXT season. It may seem like an easy way to get a deal done - but you will pay for it in the long-run. You are basically robbing Peter to pay Paul

Trade for assets not for names. Especially when you are a asset weak team. Keep flipping those assets until you get pieces you need. Make as many trades you need to get to the desired results. Don't be scared to "lose" a trade to make your team better in your eyes. Sometimes you have to overpay to get what you want, especially when dealing with star players. If getting a player makes you happy and makes things more fun than that makes it worth it.
Most importantly have fun. Make the team the way you want to and don't try and follow someone else's model.

Watch for the 'low ball' approach. This is a tactic where a GM starts off with a really bad offer - and then move up from there. It may seem like they are making you fair offer, but the deal only starts to look good relative to the original starting point. Make sure you come at it with fresh eyes and ask if it is a good offer - not one that is just better than there original cruddy starting point.

Have a master plan, it doesn't have to be written in stone and one that you can alter along the road... but have a direction or goal that you are trying to accomplish.
A lot of teams want to get younger and upgrade at the same time... for them to get this, chances are you are taking on older and downgrading. This may be a perfect trading partner if you are looking to spread your depth and add experience, but if it isn''t then don't let the other GM dictate what your teams direction should be by what he wants to move
With 29 other GM's in this league there is always one trading partner who has their team running in the direction that makes both your squads perfect trading partners

This is one of my pet peeves when it comes to fantasy hockey and trading.
Also good thread, hopefully it comes in handy for me down the road.

Even if you have a team you think is middle of the table, don't trade your 2016 1st. The sim can be very mean so unless you are getting an outstanding deal then would keep it and see how the squad does the first 3-4 months.

One of the main reasons why I turned my team around is to be constantly trading. Minor upgrades will turn your team around.
Also, use all the roster spots you can with decent prospects if possible. You never know when you'll find an Ondrej Palat, and the best part is that in most cases these players are free.

Unless you are the Ducks and are always in the top 3 in the league. Then you should trade your first, claiming that your team should be terrible this year and getting maximum value for your 29th overall.

Remember this is the CPHL not the NHL. The SIM likes certain players regardless of ratings, always has.
Dont be blinded by the fact that he is a decent NHLer, he may well suck donuts here in the CPHL.
