I dont think he can read.

Did you hear that 'speech' he just finished? I dont mean to be insulting but I think Ryan Smyth may be genuinely illiterate.

Could be a tad extreme, no? Don't forget, Iginla, at his own admission, considered him a great player and spent a lot of time trying to convince him to play in Calgary.

And to Kevin Lowe and the Oilers management team, I can't put into words how much you made the last two years of my career a living hell.

And to the fans, I know I depart now, but you should know that when I look at all of the young players in the dressing room pulling on the Oilers jersey that I can say for sure that you are boned, I should have signed with the Flames, it was a big mistake, hell I could have signed in Florida and won more games ffs.

So as I leave this public life and walk out that door into a life without hockey, I want the fans to remember me as a player that just wasn't good, and I will be burning my Oiler silks in a trash barrel surrounded by hobos singing "Camp Town Races"

He did say something along those lines. First of all he didnt know how to pronounce his coach's name and then secondly he claims that he came back to get into the playoffs while playing 'with these talented kids.....but that didnt happen.'

I know some now-late-30's folk living in Calgary who went to high school in Moose Jaw. I don't want to pile on someone on the day of their retirement announcement, but it was understood even back then that he'd never write a book. And perhaps never read one.

It would be kind of neat to hear Smyth and Theoren Fleury speak "Moose Jaw" to each other.

What a bunch of horse####. I watched him play here, he's personal friends with one of my best friends and he's no ######.

I was told he'd never write a book , and probably never read one. Never called him a ######, that's offensive.

Woah man don't be slinging the R word around here. All someone said was that he probably couldn't read and may need a handler to get dressed in the morning and before games.

Haven't seen this posted here yet so uhhh, I'll post it:

Mark Spector ‏@SportsnetSpec 14m
I saw 3 Oilers players at Smyth's retirement. Find the answer to why there wasn't 23, and u might be on to what's happened to this org.

For sure. It means no leadership or camaraderie in the room. If one of those in the room was Ference, he should have made sure via personal call each player was coming. If Ference wasn't there, well, he shouldn't be captain. But either way he shouldn't be captain.

Does Taylor Hall lead this team even without the captaincy? Well if so, he should have made sure every player was there.

I think you're kind of hitting the nail on the head though. I dont think there is any player on the Oilers that could have made sure that every player was there. Thats kind of the problem.

Slinging dirt about someone you know nothing about is offensive. Geez. And how would your friends in their 30's even know. They would have been low teens when he played here. Hardly the age group to be judging. Most of the adults of that era know better.

There's always someone who knows something derogatory about someone. Why people spread that third and fourth party bs is beyond me.

So adults who didn't go to school with Ryan Smyth or hang out in the same circles as Ryan Smyth (since he was a teenager, and that would be weird) know more about Ryan Smyth's intelligence than people who were the same age as Ryan Smyth and likely ran through the same circles?

Give it a rest.

So the captain and about 6 assistants don't show up. Maybe Ference is on suicide watch.

stuff like that is embarrassing for the team, should have been all 23 there

Iggy gets the entire Flames team out to shake Trevor Linden's hand after his last game and not one of the Oilers can get their teams $&$* together to attend a press conference for a guy that played for the oganization for 15 years
