I have a Kindle, bought one for my mom. It has the best battery, which really is the most important feature.

The Kindle has turned me into more of a reader. Without a doubt.

I've heard the Kobo Aura has the longest battery life, but I think most of the major e-readers are close enough for it to be unimportant (reported battery life is starting to get into the 2 month range for some of the newer models). Any dedicated e-reader will be way better than a tablet though.

I have a Kobo Arc and am happy with it. It is kind of like a tablet too so I use it quite often for going online and have a few apps on it too. It can do PDF format which is handy and at least when I was shopping around some of them didn't. I've had it for about a year and haven't had any issues with it.

I bought a Kobo Glo because I wanted the e-ink display, not a fan of reading books on an LCD screen. It also became my main choice since it accepts the standard .epub format, allowing you to borrow digital books from libraries. It also came in handy when I wanted to convert my existing paperback collection to digital format but didn't want to re-buy books I already owned. I really like the Kindle hardware, but being Amazon only swayed me away

The new goggles also do nothing.

Thanks that was a question that was in my mind. Converting existing kindle books to .epub was easier last time I tried it compared to the first time I did it so I might get one, agree on the LCD thing.

How well do the Kobos handle scanned PDFs? Have a couple of scanned PDFs and the Sony reader I used to have was a PITA because it would change back to the default zoom on every page turn.

Never tried PDFs, though it does support them

If you search youtube there are videos showing PDF performance. I think the one I saw was Kindle Paperwhite vs Kobo Aura.
