I want to buy a turntable
Hey guys, just curious if anyone can recommend a good brand and/or store to pick up a turntable. I am not local to Calgary, so a major chain would be the best.
I want to get into collecting records, I decided I am not hipster enough already, and would like to recommend this as a Christmas present.
Anything in particular to watch for when choosing one?

There's a place on 16th ave called Vintage HiFi (I think) that you should definitely check out. Regardless of where you go make sure you get a good amp. Seems obvious but it's worth mentioning.

What kind are you looking for? Do you want just a day to day record player or a DJ quality turntable? Axe music is good to check out, same with long and mcquaid.

Ya just day to day use, something to play records on that sounds good but isn't over the top. I know nothing about record players..
Thanks for the suggestions, we have a long and mcquade here I can check out.
I never even thought about the amp part..

This might be a questionable item as far as record players go, but the utility of one of these is not to be understated.
There are many models, but the one I used would record records, 8 tracks and tapes to CD, plus obviously play any of those items. It had the typical aux outputs so you should be able to use with a separate tuner etc.

Make sure you get something with a dedicated phono in. Or a turntable that has a built in pre-amp.
I've got this turntable:

Nothing to compare it to, but I'm happy with it.

What are you using this turntable for?
Are you going to go all out and become an audiophile? If so, then you can get record players that cost thousands upon thousands of dollars BEFORE the needle.
If you want it to DJ you'll be in tough as most DJ's have switched to CD-J's or Laptops but I'm sure you can find something used out there.
If you just want it "for show" then go to a thrift store or something like Cash Converters and get one for like $20.

Look for a direct drive, rather than a belt drive. They'll last longer.
Depending on your listening habits, it might be a good idea to look for a turntable with a usb port for transferring to your mp3 player *insert snickers about missing the point of analog sound here*
You'll probably want something that can play at different speeds as well.

Blah.
Maybe they're not all the same, but a friend of mine got one of those for Christmas one year. It sounded horrible.

Are you a billionaire? The Gramophone in Edmonton has a $25,000 cd player. I'm sure they could find something to fit your needs.
