The area they are putting in is dense but there have alloted a fairly large area for it. It is nothing even remotley close to as dense as the core of Toronto.
Its also in a very upper class area with where whites and asians make up the majority of the demographics.
I have seen where they are putting the arena and grew up there.

The other problem with Upper Canada "whatevers" is that it's counter intuitive to the geographical layout of Canada (i.e. it's basically the most southern point of the country).
Try explaining to someone it has to do with the flows and basins of the St. Lawrence.
|
That would be good then as people might actually learn something about history and geography. It's not like the terms "upper" and "lower" are completely obsolete. People still call the area around Vancouver the "lower mainland" in reference to it's position on the Fraser River.
Most teams have names that are meaningless to 90% of fans without a little bit of historical context.

The place they are putting the arena is actually in Unionville which is a small suburb in Markham. The traffic there is already a nightmare but ti is right beside a go station so I think it will float.
They already have the area designated it will be starting soon.

Not originally from here, but I do currently live here. I also used to live nearby Unionville. I don't know what name could better suit the team!

Funny I live in old Unionville again. A great town, most of the asians do not play hockey and prefer to figure skate. Unionville is nice, there are lots of asians and the girls seem to like white boys which is sweet coz I have yellow fever in me.
Having siad that, the arena is just south of 7 off of Kennedy.

The proposed 20,000-seat centre is to be located in Markham Centre on about six acres of land west of the Unionville GO Station and north of Highway 407.

A NHL team in Markham makes a lot more sense than Quebec City.

I just hope they name the team something other than "Toronto ______" or "Markham ______"
They should go as the "Ontario Somethings" like the California Angels as they were once called. How bland do the Anaheim Angels or Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (worst team name ever, the city part, not the Angels part) sound? They should have remained the California Angels, even though there were 4 other baseball teams in California at the time.
Having the team called the Ontario somethings means it represents the entire province, not just one city.

I would hate the Ontario somethings. It's hard to suddenly introduce an all-encompassing provincial team when the two major cities of the province have an existing rivalry both within and out of sports.

You don't think the Dodgers and the Giants had a rivalry before the California Angels came along?

Again, I'm thinking if anything it'll be York something. Markham is in York Region.

I don't care about them. Toronto isn't the only city in Ontario, as if they need something else to make them think they are.

i'm thinking if the Markham city council has any sway, they'll definitely be called the Markham whatevers. a professional sports team can do a lot for name recognition of a small city

True, and it is a large enough city to do well with a name on it's own. I think to appeal to the masses though, and to create more of a rivalry to the Leafs, York would be a little nicer. I have to say though, the plans for the arena are bleh. Need to go back to the drawing board for that - they are competing against the ACC afterall.

I just can't see York vs New York going over well.
Markham _______ would be fine, I just believe they could do better.

I think the NHL has a say though. They apparently told the Jets that they couldn't use "Manitoba" because it didn't have the recognition factor that a major league wants for credibility.
Neither Markham or York have it either. It is going to have to be the Ontario __________.

While listening to a Gillett interview on Prime Time Sports, he recommended that Markham not go ahead with the build but put everything in place (land, infrastructure etc.) so that they are ready if granted a franchise. Putting the building up now would be presumptious and the NHL wouldn't be impressed.
