New Canadian Currency for late 2011
I think this is a great idea.
The money will last longer and plus you can clean it! lol
Quote:
Canada’s money is going plastic, the Harper government announced in its 2010 budget today. Starting in late 2011, Ottawa will replace Canada’s paper-cotton bank notes – prone to wear and tear – with synthetic ones that last two to three times longer.
The changes are intended save on the cost of printing bills – and create a currency that’s much harder to counterfeit.
|
Quote:
Canadians will no longer have to worry that their tens and twenties might dissolve if they mistakenly go through the wash. And the bills themselves are far more indestructible, unless, of course, they are melted by a flame.

I'm fine with it as long as I can still roll the bills up to snort coke off a hooker's body.

Had an idea!

I wonder how many years it'll take before all the new bills have been introduced?

And Canada will take one more step ahead of the US in terms of currency production (I hate their 1 dollar bills)

They also don't have pennies and prices include tax, which are also great.

I'm happy we're going to polymer notes as experiences with them in Australia, Hong Kong, and Vietnam proved they were super durable.
But getting the Aussies to supply them? Weak. Isn't this the time to support Canadian Business. These guys have printed Canadian currency and have the polymer skills it would seem.

If indeed the Aussies had the lower bid, I sure hope it wasn't a close difference.

Wonder how much of a pain it will be to get vending machines / self checkouts etc. to accept these?

This is really cool.
If anyone wants to see how they make these here's a youtube link:

It looks almost impossible to counterfeit these things and they look practically indestructible.

I actually prefer to use bills over coins.

Beats the heck out of going to all coins. Although I doubt that they won't be able to be counterfeited. It's only a matter of time.

Aussies have the most technology and production facilities I guess. I'm guessing that small company is too small to really undertake this sort of scale.
The Canadian Mint will probably start buying the equipment and building factories to print our own notes in future years.

What I really want to know is if a microchip will find its way into the bills.
