A beautiful family you have MJK.
Much easier to live up there now with T.V. and computers I would think.
I was wondering where the drinking water comes from and if it's treated with chlorine or anything else.
And where does the sewage go ? Electricity from generators of course.
I've been up to Inuvik and all their services are above ground in heated boxes.

It's a very lean meat. It's a little stronger than beef but very very tasty IMO.
You can:
Fry it with butter
Make a roast
Cook ribs in the oven letting chicken noodle soup mix flavor it (had this tonight)
Cut it up in chunks, fry it and then glaze it in honey
Fry it and add corn to it
Dry it and eat it like jerky (my favorite!)

Our water comes form a lake. It is not treated but seems pretty good. We filter ours but boil it for the baby as well. It is held in a reservoir and taken by truck all over the town.
Sewage is pumped out by a truck.

Hopefully a different truck and not to the lake.

Wow--amazing pictures. That might be the best picture of the Northern Lights that I've seen.

Pretty neat stuff here. I've been to Yellowknife and Whitehorse, but they don't even compare to your home. A very neat place indeed.
A couple questions for you:
Is it possible to travel by vehicle to other towns, or even to a highway?
What is the nearest town?
Generally how long does "summer" last? Judging by the fact that lake was completely thawed and you had your boat out, I am assuming you get a decently warm and decently lengthed summer.

Seems like MJK is living the life of Elizabeth from For Better or For Worse.
Also, when you said 20 as a high temp in the summer I was like, holy crap... Then realized you didn't mean Fahrenheit...

So what's it like now (in winter)? How cold is it and do the inuit ever complain about the cold? Does anyone ever build igloos any more, for any reason?

And it's only -27 in Alert. I thought it would have been a lot colder. That's manageable.

I have been to Yellowknife and I think it is beautiful there. I love trees so that place made me homesick for Newfoundland while I was there. That's one thing I do not like about Nunavut, no trees!
There are no roads connecting any towns here. Your only option of travel is by plane.
Summer is usually only 1 month. I leave in June and there is still snow and its only about +5. I come back in early August and the temps are about 10 but that declines quickly.
