Scoring Winger
|
Marbury blew up, scoring 31, which set a US Olympic record. Boozer was key in the fourth after Lamar Odom fouled out. The game got pretty ugly towards the end, and the Spanish coach got mad at Larry Brown over a timeout mix up. Apparently the international rules for TOs are that you have to request one in advance, and then at the next stoppage it is assessed. A lot of time ticked off between the request and the actual TO, and Spain thought the US was rubbing it in.

Sour grapes from Spain. They do what they always do; undefeated in the preliminary rounds, useless in games that count (see Spanish soccer team).

The game, which eliminated Spain (5-1) from medal contention, ended acrimoniously when U.S. coach Larry Brown called a timeout with seconds left and the outcome no longer in doubt.
Spanish coach Mario Pesquera began pointing and yelling at Brown, and the two exchanged heated words on the floor afterwards, with assistant coaches from both sides having to separate the two. The crowd booed the Americans at the end of the game

What's really surprising about the whole time-out fiasco is that an American at the Olympics would do something really stupid and brash that upsets everybody and makes the US look bad. What a shock. What's next? Sprinters running with baseball caps on or gesturing with their hands to teammates at the 70m mark of a 100m race?

Pesquera was upset Brown called a timeout with 23 seconds left and the Americans leading by 11 points. He let the U.S. coach know it as they left the court.
"I had -- and I stress the word 'had' -- a lot of respect for Larry Brown,'' said Pesquera, who smirked and shook his head when he heard Brown explain that he tried to rescind the timeout. "Dean Smith would have never done anything like that.''
From CBC:
Brown, who coaches the Detroit Pistons in the NBA, said confusion about the time left in the game led to the timeout.
"I didn't want it but the officials gave it to me anyway," he said. "I tried to apologize and explain to the Spanish coach, but he didn't want to listen. He kept saying something about the NBA to me. All I can do is apologize and move on."

That is surprising, of all countries too, gshhhhhhh who would'a thought.
Ussualy in international competition Americans are known for upholding the rules to the furthest extent, and never stepping on any competiitors toes or upsetting anyone..............................or celebrating, for some strange reason they never ever celebrate after winning....wierd.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was an unwanted time out that he asked for ahead of time when the score was a lot closer.
and even if it wasn't... the Spanish have never, ever taunted another team, played cheap, dove or done anything unscrupulous in ANY sports, right?
Sports are driven by very primal instincts and sometimes they show through, get over it.

Wow, that's one bitter Spanish coach. I don't see what the big deal is. Its ot like his team was going to win the game. Larry Brown is an NBA coach that I respect, so if he says he tried to rescind his request, I believe him.
