Default Region Free DVD Player

I am looking to buy a region free DVD player. Where is the best place to buy one? What model should I be looking for? Can I get one in a normal store or do I have to shop online?

Thanks in advance!

  • What price range are you looking for?
  • Do you need all regions, or just full NTSC & PAL (ie. North American and European) compatibility?
  • Will you be using this player only for movies, or for music, mp3's, photos, etc. as well?
  • Would you like video up-conversion?
  • Would you prefer to use composite, s-video, component, or HDMI for your video connection?
Here is a decent guide to have a look at.

With a little more information we will be able to make some specific recommendations for you.

I am looking for a cheap one. Less than 100 dollars. NTSC and PAL are the only ones I need, but, it is always good to have the option in the future. Up-conversion isn't necessary. We will be using composite video.

In that case, there are a short list of recommendations. They should all meet your needs quite thoroughly.

I'd be very tempted to pay a little more for reliability myself (the main difference in price between the players is build quality). Read whatever reviews you can and make a decision based on that. You get what you pay for, but $50-$200 for a region free universal player ain't bad at all.

Oppo DV-980H
Philips DVP-5992
Philips DVP-5990
Philips DVP-5982
Philips DVP-3982
Pioneer DV-410V
Toshiba XD-E500

Unfortunately, these models are very rarely carried in stores. I am not sure about Canadian retailers (online or in-store), so I would recommend Amazon.com and 6ave.com as your best bet for purchasing these products online.

EDIT: If you're willing to pick up something used, AudiogoN.com is an excellent place to buy and sell audio and video stuff at a bargain.

Goto an asian mall like Pacific Place or wherever Franklin Mall used to be. The DVD shops should carry some players that are region free and really cheap. You can also ask them where to buy them.

I have one called Initial DVD that is region free and cost like $25.
