Left 4 Dead
Despite the cheezy name for the game, it looks to be really good zombie killing nirvana, with co-op thrown in for good measure.
Although it isn't out now, it will be in November.
and you can preload it too.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/500/
xbox 360 of course, gets a same day retail release on Nov 18th.

Another game I'm keeping my eye on. I'll have to see in November whether I need something new to play with the Deluge of titles coming out.
4 player co-op (with friendly fire enabled) sounds like good times in the making. Being able to pop into other peoples games and play as a zombie makes it even better.

Is the co-op only over Live or can 2 people on the same machine play?

I remember watching an interview with the developer team and one guy was explaining that the zombies attack in waves at different times each time you play. The game throws them at you based on how long it's been since you've last been in a firefight. The goal is to code it so that you never play the game the same way twice, and to keep things from getting too dull or too intense for prolonged periods of time. I thought that was super cool.

Apparently there is split screen, as mentioned in this Shacknews interview:
Quote:
"I know someone on Shack or Left4Dead411, someone was like, 'Oh you can see they slowed it down on the 360.' Did it seem slower to you? Yeah. We didn't slow it down at all for the 360. Our tech guys, our really smart guys, did a ton of work so that the 360 users see the same things the PC users do.
Everything's the same. When we do split-screen, we do a couple little things just graphically there to smooth things out, but it's still the same speed, same match, same number of zombies. So as we were working on it, guys were like, 'We have this big hammer, we can make less zombies.' And we're always like, 'No, we can not use that hammer. We must fix it in other ways.'

This site has a great deal of information about Left 4 Dead
http://www.left4dead411.com/
I was also a little surprised when I went into the Left 4 Dead forums (My mistake, when will I learn?) to find that there are about ten million threads on how expensive the game is going to be (PC version is $44.99 if you pre-purchase) given that it is a multiplayer only game. I personally don't mind paying standard game price if the game is good so I find the whole "It's multiplayer only, why should I pay full price" comment to be a bit frustrating. What do you guys think?

As long as it delivers an experience worth the price I don't think it matters whether it has a single player mode or not. Online experiences aren't as tacked on as they used to be. I'd much rather a company spend their time perfecting one or the other as opposed to making a mediocre single player game capped off with a mediocre multiplayer add-on.

I view it the same way as purchasing Battlefield2, there's so much content in there, and the dumb helper AI should be good enough that the AI players won't break the realism too much. 4 Campaigns consisting of 5 maps with friends dropping in/out should be pretty good. Then there's the weapon selection, and if they did anything new with the gibbage of the ghoulies/infected. There will probably be maps generated anyways for this, so as a PC buy it's pretty good, even for a AA or A class priced title. (probably will take 5-7 run threw's before the maps get old, or you've learned most of the patterns that the AI will throw at you so that means at least 15-25 hours of play time)
As an example with COD4, I found that I was only replaying 1 short section at a time, mostly the end plane highjack, and the C-130 shooting mission to see how high of a score I could obtain. Never really did get into the MP portion.

Not at this time. They have stated that anything is possible, but there are no PS3 versions in the works right now.
Also, a demo should be out early November.

There is a chance it may get the orange box treatment. Valve is quite open with the fact that they hate the ps3, so they might have another company (EA) port the game to ps3 like they did with the orange box.

Valve has released the Left 4 Dead opening cinematic, a nearly 5 minute movie-quality rollercoaster ride of badassery. Watch below, maximize to view in 720p HD.

I may literally die the from anticipation of this game.

Just saw the trailer. This game looks wild. I might get this as well after Call Of Duty.

The game looks sick, and the idea for the game was awesome when it was released. But there is too many other games on my list...nonetheless, I will probably pick this up as well. I really need a life.

It has always been like this. All the big releases are in autumn (Sept-Nov), nothing good usually comes out during summer. It sucks because as you said, nothing to play for months, than all of a sudden I have 7 games to play being released within like 3 weeks. WTF!?

I don't usually find penny arcade that funny, but the last few have been really good imo.
I still have games from last years fall rush that I haven't touched yet
