Default "Canadian" is a racial slur in Texas

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WeirdNew...99585-sun.html

Odd. A district attorney described members of the jury who were black as "Canadians". And "Canuck" is also a racial slur.

EDIT: A link to a more informative story covering the same thing: http://www.nationalpost.com/most_pop...html?id=261254

Well I tested out Urban Dictionary to see if this really was the case, and guess what, yeah its actually quite common I guess.

Quote:
A slang term for African Americans used by a small, but growing group of people in Indiana and Chicago. The term was created as a substitute for the pejorative, N**ger, in order to express the term but avoid any conflicts.
Quote:
A deregatory term used primarily by white waiters and waitresses to describe black people.
Quote:
For example, if there is a group of black people around and you are talking to your white friends, you can't be overheard saying "yeah, my building has a black doorman" so you say "My building has a Canadian doorman" and they know what you mean.
Who knew.

I've heard it used several times here in Virginia. I'm not sure it is always used as mean spirited as the article suggests, but probably not a great thing to say.

I think the more unsettling part is that there are those people who think that the racism is acceptable because they are using a word that doesn't offend people to single out a visible minority.

So what does this make Peter Worrell?

Swedish? Canadian? White? Black? All four?

Didn't he claim to be Andreas Lilja once? That would make him Swedish-Canadian, I guess.

I wonder if it has to do with the underground Railroad to Canada back in the day. Maybe they dislike Canadians because we were providing the means to escape slavery.

Well, Vancouver better hope they never put an NHL team in Alabama, or there might be a lynch mob waiting for them as their charter hits the tarmac...

I'm guessing people that do those sorts of things don't really make that distinction.

Hell, to most of the ass backwards rednecks who would use Canadian in this way, Jewish is a race. They aren't the smartest folks you know.

You're giving people too much credit. I highly doubt that most of the people that use the term as a "racist replacement" are clever enough, or that familiar with history, to relate it to the Underground Railroad.

First I have heard of it in Dallas.

Then again, there is a hockey team here, so a lot of folks talk about how nice all the Canadian players they have met are. And sort of project that onto all of Canada and Canadians. Which is a shame for them, because I am a total dick, and they don't find that out until much later.

I am guessing most of the people using "Canadian" instead of "Ni---r" are the same ones who don't mind using "gay" as a synonym for "lame".

Stupid bigoted ones.
