Would you consider him Canadian or Trinidadian? He grew up in Trinidad and became a Canadian citizen in 2003.
The Canadian Business Pursuit had a decent article about him.

Canadian. He's a Canadian citizen, after all.

I remember seeing interviews with him on some golf shows before he was officially a citizen, and he had nothing but great things to say about Canada and Calgary.

Definitely Canadian now.

Just don't tell NBC, which didn't mention his Canadian connection at all last weekend when he was leading the US Open.

they did have the canadian flag by his name on the leaderboard.

he's lived here much longer than he has been a citezen for, he's canadian enough for my standards.

Doesn't matter how long he's lived here, as long as he's a Canadian citizen, then I consider him Canadian.

Probably fair for both countries to consider him theirs.

If Weir applied for American citizenship, would he no longer be Canadian?

Who's the more Canadian, the one from Trinidad who choses to live in Calgary. Or the one from Canada who choses to live in Utah? I'm not sure the answer to that.

Citizenship is just a document. I may apply for American citizenship at some point, if I need it for a job or something. I wouldn't feel any less Canadian. Although I do feel somewhat less Canadian than I did when I lived there. I'll probably also apply for my son's Canadian citizenship at some point, but as much as I'd like to Consider him Canadian, it's pretty hard seeing as he's never lived there.

I did hear nbc say more than once, "Ames, the pride of Trinidad and Tobago, who now calls Calgary, Canada home"

I was at the Canadian Open a couple years ago in Hamilton and a kid came up to him during the practice round on Wed. and asked him to sign something, I was standing right there and the kid said, "cool, i got a canadian to sign my hat at the canadian open" Ames looked at the kid and said, and i quote...."i'm not canadian" and he walked away. I haven't had much use for the guy since then.

Huh? He wasn't Canadian at the time. I'm a Canadian who's live in the US for a few years. If by some miracle, I woke up one day as an awesome golfer, and qualified for the US open... And some kid came up to me and called me an American, I would be quick to correct him.

I talked to him on the phone through work for about 25 minutes one time. I realized about 2 minutes into the call that this was Ames, Stephen A-la pro golfer. He was so cheery the whole time, even when I had to put him on hold he was still easy going. At the end of the call I just said, "And Congrats on the victory last week", as it was just a few days after he won the Players. He said thanks...thanked me, and said my supervisor should give me a raise because I worked twice as fast as the last guy he talked to at the place.

Strangly enough, the next person that called was Tony Amonte. At the end of that call I mentioned that I talked to Stephen Ames right before him, and he said something about how the three of us should go golfing. I wanted to ask if you can hit the post in golf...

Well, if i had lived in the country like him and was in the process of getting my citizenship i wouldn't tell a kid that.

Ames is more of a Canadian than Weir IMO.

Ames has chosen to live here and embrace this country and city.

Weir took off and lives in the States.

Ames is 100% Canadian in my books. No questions or otherwise. Good on him.

Unfortunately, most people I talk to (Juventus aside) about Ames seem to finish up with "....he seems like he's kind of a dick".

Not saying that's true by any means as I've never met him, but it does seem to be his image in the media and of the general public.

I noticed at the US Open, Pengrowth no longer sponsors him - odd.

Last Christmas I was with my g/f in Maui and we got to meet Stephen Ames. He was playing in the Mercedes Championship and happen to stay at the same hotel we were staying in at the Westin in Kaanapali. Anyways, long story short we were just relaxing by the pool when I noticed this guy that looked like Stephen Ames. After a couple more minutes of just watching him, we went up to him and talked to him for a bit. He only had lovely things to say about Calgary and how much he loved it here. We wished him good luck and got a picture with him. I have to say he was very down to earth and liked to laugh. I would consider him Canadian
