Flames Derek Ryan retires

Really unique and impressive career, shame he ended up in Edmonton but played his best hockey in Calgary. Won't be all at surprised if he ends up as a coach.

Too bad he ended his career as an Oiler. However, he did take shots at the team on his way out:

I'm surprised that he's surprised.

Clearly, Ryan wasn't happy with the way his playing time was handled down the stretch, suggesting that under the old management, a player of his experience and caliber would have been respected much more throughout the process.
When in doubt...overplay the wonder-twins. This is no secret. Every coach that has gone through that turnstyle has done the exact same thing.

Mangipane - Ryan - Hathaway was such a solid 4th line for the Flames

It's too bad that 2/3rds of it ended up to no good.

Always liked him. He was cool to deal with when he was a captain on the Golden Bears.

His old Spokane Chiefs coach Bill Peters was the guy who plucked him from the Swedish league.

"The blood, sweat, and tears that I had given with that group in three and a half years, just to have it brushed under the rug, is pretty disappointing. I don't think it would have been that way if the management wouldn't have changed."

If there is a management group that knows how to brush things under the rug its Bowman and company.

Bowman and company are despicable, but Ryan was clearly past it the last 2 seasons.

Pretty wild career. Not only undrafted, but played for a Canadian University for 4 years, then got a gig in Austria for 3 years before working his way up to being a leading scorer in the Swedish hockey league. Then makes it back to North America at age 28 and is playing in the NHL in less than a season.

Great example of someone who never gave up on their dream.

Came for the expertise on brushing things under the rug…left satisfied.

I think Doc played at a borderline 3C level in his first two years here. He was great value IMO. Played in every situation and basically always found a way to contribute. $3m was more than reasonable for what he provided.

Ryan was a good Flame. But always felt like he thought he should play a little higher.

$3.125 at that time was too much for a 3rd/4th liner.

Well he did get various cups of coffee higher up in the lineup here due to circumstances, and he looked very good.

Given his dedication to his faith (relatively speaking for a NHL/pro player), and a soft spoken guy, him firing shots in the way out is a bigger deal.

But it’s not surprising just like Holloway and his comments earlier this week. The Oilers bottom 5 forwards are a mish mash of experienced players cobbled together and basically ignored by the coaches as they have to keep their focus on McDavid and Draisital. It’s surprising he was there that long.

Loved him as a Flame.

Dead to me when he became an Oiler.
