Default Is Dustin Wolf Rookie of the Year?

Curious where people stand on this. As an “undersized” goalie and playing on a low scoring team I think his performance should give him the Rookie nod this year.

He really should be in strong consideration, but I feel the bias towards skaters will be the determining factor. Michkov being a 25+ goal 60+ point rookie (extrapolated for the rest of the season) is tough to vote against. Whats great is we all know Wolfie is the biggest reason for our successes this year and he's one of the big pieces we needed to be competitive.

If Calgary makes the playoffs I think he wins it.
If not he won’t.

I think it will be Michkov or Celebrini. Most likely Michkov because of the eastern factor.

Definitely deserves consideration though.

Not when Quebec journalists vote for their guy and leave Wolf off the ballot.

Still think it is Hutson or Celebrini. Celebrini looks like a sure fire #1C and Hutson is having a crazy season for a rookie dman. Don’t remember the last race that had a center, winger, dman, and goalie all in the discussion.

I forgot about Hutson. Playing in Montreal is going to help him too.

I don't see how Michkov is in the mix when Celebrini has more points in 10 less games while being two years younger. To me its between Wolf, Hutson and Celebrini.

Objectively I think Wolf is doing the most for his team to win games at the moment. Celebrini/Hutson/Michkov all have a pretty godawful +/-. But it'll probably be one of Celebrini/Hutson for reasons mentioned above.

Hes easily our MVP. Just as Kipper was . Oh, and get used to it because its really early.

Give Dustin a defense , scoring, backchecking forewards to help that D so guys arent coming in a full speed through the neutral zone making our D look like pylons and things WILL change.

You made half my point I came to post. Don’t forget about those spiteful hacks to the north that probably won’t vote for him either.

Wolf should be ROTY, but he probably won't be.

I’d say he’s a longshot at best. Goalies rarely win it and the last two that did, didn’t exactly have superstar careers. I think that makes voters hesitant. They tend to prefer skaters.

Finishing top three would be quite an accomplishment given the competition he’s facing.

Some voters also seem to have a bias against the older rookies. Which I think is dumb. If they are eligible they should be valuated on their merits and performance.

That being said, I don't have much quibble with any of Huston, Michkov, Wolf or Celibrini. All are worthy.

The odds will likely be against him. I think he definitely deserves to win the Calder at this point but there are a lot of things working against him in terms of voting including:

1. He plays for Calgary. I don’t mean that it’s a conspiracy against the flames. Just that it’s always harder to a flame to win these awards because sports writers don’t give the flames as much attention. Smaller market. Less media.
2. He is going up against 2 high draft pick players (Celebrini and Michkov) and a Montreal Canadiens player with tons of hype. Those are the players media like to fawn over - especially in the east.
3. Montreal sports writers have not been afraid to down-ballot other deserving players for awards to increase the chances of their guy winning the award. Could see this happening to Wolf.
4. He’s a goalie and it’s very rare for goalies to win it. He will be held to a higher standard than the others in order to win it. For Wolf to even have a chance to win the Calder, the flames have to make the playoffs. Period. That’s not the case with the other 3 top guys in the race. Their chances of winning the Calder likely has very little to do with their team’s success.
4. He’s the oldest of the rookies. This shouldn’t be a detriment to Wolf’s chances but it will be with some writers. I recall interviews with some sports media guys that got to cast a ballot in the Calder vote in the past and they would say they take age into account. Pretty sure there was some of that opinion when Panarin won the Calder trophy.
5. Wolf played NHL games last year down the stretch. Again, some will use that to discredit him as a rookie even though he fully qualifies as one this year. Sports writers that want to “their guy” to win will use any excuse to down ballot other players in contention for the award.

He'll be 24 years old in a month and made his professional debut more than five years ago. Hardly a rookie.

Are you saying we are all wrong and Wolf is not eligible for the ROTY trophy?

Today is a weird day for alternative facts, they're all over the place.
