Clearly they aren't following the Arizona blueprint of at least moving to the top of the NHL alphabetically.

Spoiler alert: it’s about a POS owner wanting public money.
Quote:
Monumental recently asked the District for $600 million in public funding to renovate and upgrade the 26-year-old Capital One Arena, which would cover the majority of an $800 million transformation. Monumental has spent nearly $160 million on renovations of Capital One Arena over the years, while the District subsidized improvements in 2007 with $50 million in tax-increment financing.

The Washington Post reported the state would create a Virginia stadium authority to build and own a massive mixed-use development that would include an arena in Potomac Yard for the Wizards and Capitals.

Yeah, unless something has changed recently, this is more about leverage with DC to keep them in the middle of the city.
As I understand the layout of the city, a lot of the defence contractors are on the west side because that's where the Pentagon is, so there would be a lot of money over there. This would make it a better location than Landover, where the Cap Center used to be (RIP Saddle-shaped friend), but downtown is probably still preferred.

Well dammit, I was always a bit happy knowing I wasn't giving any state or local taxes to stadiums or arenas.

DC mayor just announced legislation that would kick $500 million over 3 years into renovations for Capital One arena.

This is only the beginning. ~23/32 NHL arenas are 20+ years old.
There will be a constant stream of NHL owners with their hands out, either for refurbishment or new facilities.

This is borderline ridiculous. A 26 year old arena does not need to be abandoned for a new one. I don't care where the money comes from, it is a total waste of resources and just indicative of how wasteful we actually are. Almost as dumb as arenas being "too far away" but only after so many years and not when it was actually build.

As opposed to the poor richer heavenscape that we used to have when 2/3 of the arenas weren't 20+ years old?
I have neither the time nor the energy to care what people in Massachusetts or DC or Quebec or anywhere else want to do with their 20 year old arenas. If you vote in people that want to spend money on new ones, you did it. Not me.

Ted Leonsis, the owner of the Capitals has a net worth of around 2.8 Billion. If he spent 800 million, he would still be worth 2 billion. I understand the financial math involved is not quite that simple, but asking for handouts from area taxpayers for a new building still makes him a POS in my mind. That might be just me though. With rare exception, I loathe the Uber rich for their lack of conscience when it comes to giving back to the society that made them wealthy.

A whole new arena after 26 years is a bit of an ask. Here in the hinterlands, we push right up to retirement age.
I had no idea the Virginia's were breeding. Soon all states will be Virginia.
