Winning a Stanley Cup gets you paid. No matter how mediocre you may be now.
 See: Matt Murray

Yikes. He’s not worth close to that. Same salary as Markstrom.

This is a fine example of paying for potential. We know he can be a top goalie for spurts, but pretty questionable that STL was willing to bet 6 years on it

I'm just not sure if Binnington is a top goalie, or a goalie who got hot at the right time.
He is still young though, so if he finds consistency, the drop off risk isn't that big,

I find it crazy they tried to nickle and dime their captain but just throw money at Faulk, Krug and Binnington

This is good news for the west. Once signed, he will degrade.

Blues are carrying $14M in Injury Reserve that all falls off next year, but Falk, Krug and Schenn are going to be expensive for years to come. I’m not really liking their team makeup.

I like Binnington, but I don't like this deal at all. I'd take it over the Matt Murray contract though.

No obvious alternatives and they're right in the midst of their competitive window...most of their core is 28-32, so the last few years of the deal probably won't matter. Only a 1.6M increase from this year.

How many times can a Patrick Roy actually be a Patrick Roy? It seems there's always a goalie that comes out of nowhere as a rookie and just plays lights out for their first season or two... there haven't been very many in history who played like that for their entire career.
Like I can't think of another goalie other than Roy who won a cup as a rookie and was just as good, if not better, for their entire career. I mean Vernon went to the finals as a rookie and then went on to win two cups, a playoff MVP and a Jennings -- but his last couple seasons were downright awful.
