Default Converting VHS tapes to Digital

I have a bunch of old home video tapes that have been sitting around for many years and decades. They are definitely starting to lose their quality (wasn't great to begin with) but I want to keep them around.

I know there are tools out there to convert VHS to digital formats on the computer (e.g. MP4) . Has anyone used these tools? Any advice?

I am not a super tech guy but my goal is to save these recordings on my hard drive at the very end.

Thanks!
