Johnny Cash: 26 February 1932 - 12 September 2003

Born 26 February 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas. His brother was killed when he tripped over a power saw. Made his first single "Hey Porter" for Sun Records in 1955. In 1958 he moved to Columbia Records. He had long periods of drug abuse during the sixties. In the late sixties he quit his drug addiction with the help of singer June Carter. Johnny married June in 1968. In 1971 he appeared in the Western, A Gunfight (1971) with Kirk Douglas. In 1975 he wrote his autobiography, "Man In Black", which is now out of print. In the late eighties he moved from Columbia Records to the Mercury, Nashville label. Then in the nineties moved from Mercury to American Recordings.

Amonst his biggest hit records was "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire" and "A boy named Sue".

After some years of ill health, he died of complications from diabetes on 12 September 2003, only a few months after the death of his beloved wife

Wore the only Johnny Cash t-shirt to work today, and as always had his songs in heavy rotation on whatever I was listening too. I work at a co-owned Rock and Country Radio station, and the Country part was doing it's part not to forget the Man in Black today.

I remember it quite vividly because my then 2 year old son was up at 5 in the morning, so I took him out of the house to let my wife and newborn sleep

We drove past my neighbours heading to the hospital to deliver their daughter (she turned 2 today) and then turned on the radio where I heard both had died

ps. too bad the Rock station isn't playing some Johnny Cash too. that guy is Rock and Roll IMO

Thanks for posting this. I grew up a huge Johnny Cash and country music fan (odd for a Toronto-born/raised kid of South African immigrants) and I really loved the stuff he did with American Recordings toward the end of his life. Everyone has seen the video for "Hurt" and it's hard to watch that and not be impacted.

I'm attending the Canadian Country Music Association Awards tonight at the Saddledome, and it'd be nice if they mentioned Cash, but with the focus on Alberta's centennial, I assume that's what everyone will be talking about.

I have a lot of Johnny Cash on the iPod. Great, great stuff.

I watched a Johnny Cash tribute a few weeks ago.. hosted by Tim Robbins. I liked how they didn't just have artists covering Johnny's songs, but also had anecdotes about his life mixed in.

What has he done to make a memorial for him other than music?

when good political leaders and humanitarions die they are memorial worthy. If I started a Tupac Memorial thread tommorow I'd get flamed.

Although he left me scarred psychologically as a youngster - through no fault of his own - I would have to agree he is thread-worthy.

A few years ago, when he was still alive, there was a Johnny Cash tribute that was really fabulous, the likes of Emmy Lou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Sheryl Crow teaming up while Chris Isaak doing a great job on "Get Rythym or Lyle Lovett, Dave Matthews . . . . . . on and on. Cash was on at the end of the show but it was almost anti-climatic to what some great artists had done with his songs earlier in the evening.

One doesn't have anything to do with the other.

Someone started a thread for an artist they really enjoyed and miss. Why come into that thread to talk about how you don't think its thread-worthy. Just ignore it. It boggles my mind when people post in a thread that holds no interest for them.

Frankly I think John Ritter is thread worthy too.

anyways Johnny Cash was a legend, and obviously has his fans.

I'm no Tupac fan, but I'd say feel free if you wanted to memorialize him. I'd say the same thing if someone started a thread on Kurt Cobain or some other guy who died 'too young' . it's all good

Definitely a good topic. Thanks for starting this thread, Adam. My parents had the radio dial stuck on 960 CFAC in the 60s and 70s when they played both types of music: Country AND Western. I grew to love country "rockers" like Cash and Conway Twitty.

Oh...and the 9/11 thing? Was done one year and on day ago on this very board....until a group of bleeding hearts hijacked it as well and wanted to call everyone else who posted sentiments in it "hypocrites", for not posting a similar thread for any of the other mass deaths that have occurred both recently and in the past.

I'm guessing they will be out in full force after this thread wondering why someone didn't start a similar topic on Somalia, Bangladesh, Iraq, or some other equally unrelated topic.

Well, Johnny Cash was an outlaw his entire life. That's what is so cool about him.

He had that sort of beatific air about him near the end of his life but for many of his 73 years he was a drug-addled, gun-toting, brawling, cheating, hoboing troublemaker.

His most famous song is about shooting someone. The original gangster rapper!

Or i can save you the time.... he was an alcohol and drug abuser at times during his life, but he never ever was charged or convicted of anything more than that, at least as far as i have ever read or heard about the man.

His myth is obviously as strong as ever.....but beyond playing for inmates at San Quentin and Folsom Prison, he never spent more than a night in jail, and almost exclusively those were in the drunk tank......if that makes him equivalent to a gangster....i guess you are correct.

Exactly, "I hung my head" is the one I think your talking about, at least thats my favorite. I love the hypocricy when people call out rappers for being "criminals" when their favorite artists were too.
